BRANCHED POLYPROPYLENE FOR FOAM APPLICATIONS

The present invention relates to a polypropylene composition comprising a branched polypropylene (b-PP) having high melt strength (HMS). Furthermore, the present invention also relates to a method for providing the corresponding polypropylene having composition comprising the branched polypropylene (b-PP) and to a foam with the polypropylene composition comprising the branched polypropylene (b-PP). The branched polypropylene (b-PP) is based on a random copolymer with a small amount of ethylene.

The base resin includes a very high molecular weight polyethylene component, a low molecular weight polyethylene component having a weight average molecular weight lower than a weight average molecular weight of the very high molecular weight component and a high molecular weight component having a weight average molecular weight higher than the weight average molecular weight of the low molecular weight component, but lower than the weight average molecular weight of the very high molecular weight component. The present invention deals with a process for polymerising ethylene in the presence of an olefin polymerisation catalyst comprising titanium, magnesium and halogen in at least one polymerisation stage where ethylene is polymerised in slurry, the process comprising treating the polymerisation catalyst in a pre-treatment step by polymerising an olefin on the polymerisation catalyst so that the ratio of the weight of the olefin polymer to the weight of the original solid catalyst component is from 0.1 to 10 g/g and using the pre-treated catalyst in the production of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
