Methods and compositions for synthesizing improved silk fibers

The present disclosure provides methods and compositions for directed to synthetic block copolymer proteins, expression constructs for their secretion, recombinant microorganisms for their production, and synthetic fibers (including advantageously, microfibers) comprising these proteins that recapitulate many properties of natural silk. The recombinant microorganisms can be used for the commercial production of silk-like fibers.

The present disclosure relates to fibrillated fibers and a method for preparing the same. In the present disclosure, there is provided a preparation method capable of providing fibers suitable for complexing with plastics in a more simplified process. According to the preparation method of the present disclosure, microfibers can be easily miniaturized with little energy by growing fine particles on the microfibers to fibrillate the microfibers, and then applying a shear force thereto, and various physical properties can be expressed from the grown fine particles.

Microfluidic extrusion

Implantable scaffolds made from biopolymer fibers. Biopolymer is dissolved in acid in a closed container made of materials inert to the acid and to the collagen to form a biopolymer solution. The solution is stirred, then centrifuged to degas it. The degassed solution is put into syringes on a holder. The number of syringes equals the number of fibers in the bundle. The syringes are mounted in a rotatable holder. Essentially equal quantities of degassed solution are extruded from the syringes to produce fibers, which are gathered and fed into a formation buffer bath. The fibers are kept taught after extrusion and dehydrated in a dehydrating solution in a dehydrating bath. The fibers are wound a collector to collect the bundle. Scaffolds then are made.

Biomimetic Chemocatalytic Cascades Of Degradable Polymers

A method of simultaneously modifying degradation rates of at least two compounds including a first compound having a first unmodified degradation rate constant k.sub.1 and a second compound having a second unmodified degradation rate k.sub.2 is provided. The method includes combining a first composition including the first compound with a second composition including the second compound, degrading the first compound and forming a first degradation product; and degrading the second compound and forming a second degradation product. The second degradation product modifies the first unmodified degradation rate constant k.sub.1 of the first compound to a first modified degradation rate k.sub.1′ and the first degradation product modifies the second unmodified degradation rate k.sub.2 of the second compound to a second modified degradation rate k.sub.2′. Compositions resulting from the method are also provided.

Methods and systems of the present invention use mixed textile feedstock, which may include post-consumer waste garments, scrap fabric and/or other textile materials as a raw feed material to produce isolated cellulose and other isolated molecules having desirable properties that can be used and be used in the textile and apparel industries, and in other industries. A multi-stage process is provided, in which mixed textile feed material is subjected to one or more pretreatment stages, followed by at least two pulping treatments for isolating cellulose molecules and other molecular constituents, such as polyester. The isolated cellulose and polyester molecules may be used in a variety of downstream applications. In one application, isolated cellulose and polyester molecules are extruded to provide regenerated cellulose fibers and regenerated polyester fibers having desirable (and selectable) properties that are usable in various industrial applications, including textile production.

CELLULOSE-CONTAINING MATERIALS

Disclosed is a process for solubilising cellulose and coagulating the resulting solution to form a cellulose-containing material. The process comprises contacting a cellulose source with a solvent comprising zinc ions and formic acid to provide a solution, coagulating the solution to provide a solid material, and isolating the solid material after treatment, to provide the cellulose-containing material. The process further involves a method of stabilising the solid material, such as treating the solid material with a reducing agent, treating the solid material in water at an elevated temperature, treating the solid material with an organic solvent, pre-treating the cellulose-containing solution with a freeze-thaw cycle and/or isolating a cellulose formate intermediate. The process can further comprise solubilising protein and coagulating the resulting solution to form a cellulose/protein-containing material.
