Tobacco-derived nanocellulose material

The present disclosure relates to cellulose nanomaterials made or derived from tobacco and methods for the production thereof. The tobacco-derived cellulose nanomaterials can be employed in various industrial applications such as film forming applications and solution thickening technologies. In particular, the disclosure is directed to methods for preparing tobacco-derived cellulose nanomaterials using less fibrillation cycles than in the production of wood pulp. The invention includes a method for preparing tobacco derived nanocellulose material comprising receiving a tobacco pulp in a dilute form such that the tobacco pulp is a tobacco pulp suspension with a consistency of less than about 5%; and mechanically fibrillating the tobacco pulp suspension to generate a tobacco derived nanocellulose material having at least one average particle size dimension in the range of about 1 nm to about 100 nm.

High-permeability cellulose fibers

High permeability curly fibers with enhanced fiber strength are produced by mercerizing cellulosic fibers. The fibers have relatively high values for curl, kink level, wet tensile strength, and bulk density when compared with current fibers. The disclosed fibers can be used in a wide range of applications including paper products such as filters.

Process for the production of a microfibrillated cellulose composition

The present invention relates to a process for the production of microfibrillated cellulose composition, wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has an average fiber length in the range from 500 to 1300 m and a percentage of fiber length in the category 200 m of at least 15%, obtained by subjecting an aqueous mixture comprising 30 to 70% by weight of cellulose containing fibers to mechanical shearing at a temperature in the range of from 40 C. to 120 C. in the presence of at least one thermostable biocide, to the microfibrillated cellulose composition obtained in this process and their use in a process for production of paper, card and board comprising draining a paper stock comprising the microfibrillated cellulose composition with sheet formation in the wire.

Process for producing a pulp

The invention relates to a process for producing a dissolving pulp from a cellulosic starting material using the kraft process, comprising the step of cooking the starting material with a cooking liquor. The process according to the invention characterized in that the starting material is exposed to a steam treatment prior to cooking and that the pulp obtained by cooking is subjected to cold caustic extraction (CCE) in the course of further processing.

Method of removing odors from fibrous materials used in forming biocomposite materials

A method to treat fibrous materials for use in the formation of a biocomposite material that significantly reduces or eliminates the odors emitted from the fibrous materials is provided. In the method, the fibers or fibrous materials are initially treated to extract the raw fiber from the source plant material and the remove unwanted fractions of the fiber, such as the hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin, among others, leaving only the intact cellulose fibers. These cellulose fibers are then further processed in a second step to remove the odor from the cellulose fibers. The second step includes a combination of a second chemical treatment, dehumidification, and/or a cold plasma modification to render the cellulosic fibers odorless.
