Fractal-like polymeric particles and their use in diverse applications

Fractal-like polymeric particles having a hierarchical, branched structure are disclosed. The particles have fibers with nanometer-scale diameters on their peripheries, which enables a number of unique and highly desirable properties. The particles are fabricated by a method combining phase separation and shear forces of different solutions, in particular a polymer solution. In addition, the particles may be used as coatings, nonwovens, textiles and viscosity modifiers and adhesives, among other applications.

A METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A COATED PAPER, PAPERBOARD OR FILM AND A COATED PAPER, PAPERBOARD OR FILM

The present invention relates to a method for the production of a coated paper, paperboard or film, wherein the method comprises the steps of; providing a first suspension comprising cellulose fibers and/or nanocellulose, applying the first suspension on a substrate to form a fibrous web, wherein the web has a first and a second side, providing a second suspension comprising polymers and/or particles wherein the second suspension has a Brookfield viscosity above 3000 m Pas at a dry content between 4%-40% by weight, providing at least one calender comprising at least one roll or belt, applying the second suspension to the surface of the at least one calender roll or belt forming a coating web and conducting said fibrous web through the at least one calender whereby the coating web is applied to the first side of the web forming the coated paper, paperboard or film. The invention also relates to a paper, paperboard or film produced according to the method.

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY HEAT SEALABLE AQUEOUS BARRIER COATING FOR CELLULOSIC SUBSTRATE AND METHODS OF MAKING AND USING THE SAME

An aqueous barrier coat for formable cellulosic substrates comprises a blend of A) at least one aqueous polymer binder dispersion at 40 wt % to 95 wt %, B) at least one active filler at 3 wt % to 30 wt % and, C) one or more optional additives, such as wetting additives, dispersants, thickeners, defoamers, and crosslinkers. Crystallinity is present in at least one of the polymer binder dispersion and active filler particle. The resulting dried film has a shear storage modulus between 50° C. and 60° C. in the range of 1.5×10.sup.6 to 1×10.sup.9 Pascals, a shear storage modulus between 80° C. and 90° C. in the range of 2×10.sup.5 to 5×10.sup.7 Pascals, and a shear storage modulus between 100° C. and 110° C. is in the range of 5×10.sup.3 to 1×10.sup.6 Pascals. The total weight % of crystalline polymer binder and the crystalline active filler combined is greater than 50%.
