Polymer fiber actuators
Actuators (artificial muscles) comprising twist-spun nanofiber yarn or twist-inserted polymer fibers generate actuation when powered electrically, photonically, chemically, thermally, by absorption, or by other means. These artificial muscles utilize polymer fibers non-coiled or coiled yarns and can be either neat or comprising a guest. Devices comprising these artificial muscles are also described. In some embodiments, thermally-powered polymer fiber torsional actuator has a twisted, chain-oriented polymer fiber that has a first degree of twist at a first temperature and a second degree of twist at a second temperature in which the bias angles of the first degree and second degree of twist are substantially different.
Coiled and non-coiled twisted nanofiber yarn torsional and tensile actuators
Actuators (artificial muscles) comprising twist-spun nanofiber yarn or twist-inserted polymer fibers generate torsional and/or tensile actuation when powered electrically, photonically, chemically, thermally, by absorption, or by other means. These artificial muscles utilize non-coiled or coiled yarns and can be either neat or comprising a guest. Devices comprising these artificial muscles are also described.
BRAIDED TEXTILE SLEEVE WITH SELF-SUSTAINING EXPANDED AND CONTRACTED STATES AND ENHANCED "AS SUPPLIED" BULK CONFIGURATION AND METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION AND SUPPLYING BULK LENGTHS THEREOF
A bulk supply of a protective textile sleeve and method of construction and supplying thereof is provided. The sleeve includes a braided, tubular wall extending lengthwise along a central longitudinal axis between opposite ends. The wall has a decreased length, increased cross-sectional area first state and an increased length, decreased cross-sectional area second state. The wall has heat-set, braided yarns causing the wall to remain substantially in the first and second states absent some externally applied force. The wall is finish cut having a bulk supply shipping length extending between the opposite ends, and is configured to be subsequently cut into a plurality of discrete use lengths after shipping.
SHAPE MEMORY MATERIAL GARMENTS
Textiles and garments comprising shape memory materials are disclosed herein. Such garments can include intimate apparel.
MULTI-COMPONENT SHAPE MEMORY THREADS, FIBERS, TUBES, TAPES AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME
The invention relates to multi-component shape memory threads, fibers, tubes, or tapes, which includes at least two shape-memory polymeric (SMP-N) components. Each of the at least two SMP-N components is of at least 1% of the total weight, and N is a positive integer starting from 1, and the SMP-N components have a selectively engineered shape recovery temperature (T.sub.r) between approximately 0° C. to 130° C. Also, when T.sub.rN and T.sub.rN+1 are higher than room temperature, the threads, fibers, tubes, or tapes are configured to assume a substantially helical configuration upon heating to above T.sub.rN and lower than T.sub.rN+1 by a stimulus when an elongation of the threads, fibers, tubes, or tapes is approximately 30% to approximately 300%, and having a coil diameter from 0.5 to 10 mm and a number of the turns per cm from 5 to 30.
IMPLANTABLE PROSTHESIS
An implantable prosthesis for repairing a defect in a muscle or tissue wall. The prosthesis comprises a body of biologically compatible prosthetic material having a preformed three-dimensional contoured shape that independently assumes a three-dimensional curved shape configured to conform to the muscle or tissue wall. The body may be formed of a mesh fabric employing a knit construction. The body may be configured with one or more mechanical characteristics, individually or in any combination, having defined properties which may enhance the ability of the prosthesis to be handled in a surgical, robotic environment while meeting the performance and physical characteristics for soft tissue repair and reconstruction. One or more visual indicia may be provided to facilitate positioning and/or placement of the prosthesis at the muscle or tissue wall.
COMPOSITE MATERIAL AND METHOD OF MAKING PREFORMS, COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND ARTICLES
Some embodiments are directed to a preform including reinforcing fibres and shape memory alloy (SMA) wires, a composite material including a polymer matrix with a preform embedded therein, articles including a composite material, methods of making preforms, composite materials and articles.
MULTI-LAYER BRAIDED STRUCTURES FOR OCCLUDING VASCULAR DEFECTS
A collapsible medical device and associated methods of occluding an abnormal opening in, for example, a body organ, wherein the medical device is shaped from plural layers of a heat-treatable metal fabric. Each of the fabric layers is formed from a plurality of metal strands and the assembly is heat-treated within a mold in order to substantially set a desired shape of the device. By incorporating plural layers in the thus-formed medical device, the ability of the device to rapidly occlude an abnormal opening in a body organ is significantly improved.
ACTIVE KNIT COMPRESSION GARMENTS, DEVICES AND RELATED METHODS
Garments having active and passive knitted rows can provide desired levels of compression. Garments made of active and passive knitted rows can provide dynamic levels of compression with respect to both location and over time to address a variety of conditions.
ARTICLE OF APPAREL INCORPORATING A ZONED MODIFIABLE TEXTILE STRUCTURE
An article of apparel is disclosed that includes zones with a textile having a structure than changes or is otherwise modified by a physical stimulus, such as the presence of water or a temperature change, to modify a property of the textile. The zones may be along a center back area and/or side areas of the apparel, and the textile may increase in air permeability when exposed to water. In some embodiments, slits are formed in the textile.
