An aspect of the present disclosure is to provide a washing machine that detects contamination of water due to a dye and prevents contamination of laundry due to the dye. The washing machine includes a tub; a drum configured to be rotatable inside of the tub; a detergent supplier configured to supply a detergent to the tub; a water supplier configured to supply a water to the tub; an optical sensor provided under the tub, wherein the optical sensor includes a light emitting element and a light receiving element configured to selectively receive a plurality of visible rays having different wavelengths and an infrared ray among a light emitted from the light emitting element; and a controller configured to control the water supplier to supply the detergent and the water to the tub and rotate the drum during a washing. In addition, the controller may reduce the washing time based on the sum of the received intensities of the plurality of visible rays and the received intensity of the infrared ray.

A washing machine that performs a washing course by heating wash water and a control method thereof are provided. The method includes supplying wash water up to a wash water level for generation of steam such that a portion of laundry received in an inner tub is saturated by the wash water. The wash water level may be above a bottom surface of the inner tub and below a wash water level for main washing. The method then includes heating the wash water to a first set temperature and driving a washing heater to generate steam from the wash water, and supplying the generated steam to the inner tub, and then supplying the wash water up to the wash water level for main washing, and driving the washing heater again to heat the wash water to a second set temperature, the second set temperature being lower than the first set temperature.

A laundry treating apparatus includes a tub, a drum rotatably disposed inside the tub, a rotator that is rotatably disposed on a bottom surface of the drum and includes a pillar extending inside the drum and a plurality of blades spaced apart from each other along a circumferential direction of the pillar and inclined with respect to a longitudinal direction of the pillar, a motor for driving the drum and the rotator, and a controller that controls operation of the motor. A method for controlling the apparatus includes sensing an amount of clothes in the drum, sensing a washing load of the clothes including a moisture content from water supplied into the tub, and sensing a cloth material of the clothes. When the washing load corresponds to a normal washing load in the first cloth material sensing operation, a first washing process is performed according to the washing load.

A laundry treating apparatus includes a tub, a drum rotatably disposed inside the tub, a rotator that is rotatably disposed on a bottom surface of the drum and includes a pillar extending inside the drum and a plurality of blades spaced apart from each other along a circumferential direction of the pillar and inclined with respect to a longitudinal direction of the pillar, a motor for driving the drum and the rotator, and a controller that controls operation of the motor. A method for controlling the apparatus includes sensing an amount of clothes in the drum, sensing a washing load of the clothes including a moisture content from water supplied into the tub, and sensing a cloth material of the clothes. When the washing load corresponds to a normal washing load in the first cloth material sensing operation, a first washing process is performed according to the washing load.

A method for controlling a laundry treating apparatus includes a dry cloth sensing operation of sensing an amount of clothes put into a drum, a wet cloth sensing operation of sensing a washing load based on a moisture content of the clothes by supplying water into a tub, and a cloth material sensing operation of sensing a cloth material of the clothes put into the drum based on a rpm gap and a motor-constrained state where rotation of a motor is restricted. The rpm gap is a difference between a target rpm of a rotator in the drum and an actual rpm of the rotator.

A method for controlling a laundry treating apparatus includes a dry cloth sensing operation of sensing an amount of clothes put into a drum, a wet cloth sensing operation of sensing a washing load based on a moisture content of the clothes by supplying water into a tub, and a cloth material sensing operation of sensing a cloth material of the clothes put into the drum based on a rpm gap and a motor-constrained state where rotation of a motor is restricted. The rpm gap is a difference between a target rpm of a rotator in the drum and an actual rpm of the rotator.

A washing machine having a reminding function for preventing clothing from fading, comprising: an outer drum for accommodating washing water; a color sensor arranged on the washing machine and detecting the color of the washing water, so that according to changes in the color of the washing water in a washing process, it is determined whether the clothing being washed is fading or not. Detection of the color of the washing water achieves the aim of determining, according to the changes in the color of the washing water, whether the clothing being washed is fading or not, thereby improving the sensitivity and accuracy of determination, and preventing a situation wherein fading clothing contaminates the washing water then causes secondary contamination of other clothing being washed.
