Heat and flame-resistance materials and upholstered articles incorporating same

A mattress, foundation, or other upholstered sleep product or article includes a core and barrier material surrounding the core. The barrier material includes flame and heat-resistant material that is configured to prevent combustion of the core when the upholstered article is impinged with a gas flame according to California Technical Bulletin 603 of the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs. The barrier material may include an intumescent material that is configured to swell and char in the presence of a flame so as to form a barrier to the flame and to heat generated by the flame.

FLAME RETARDANT COVER

Flame retardant covers for mattress and flame retardant mattresses are provided. At least a portion of the fibers, yarns or the fabric of the covers is treated with a blend comprising a flame retardant compound such as ammonium phosphate. The covers do not further require any flame barrier element such as fiberglass or silica-loaded rayon. The mattresses provided herein fully comply with the federal mattress flammability standards of 16 C.F.R. 1632 and 1633.

METHOD FOR PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON FABRICS FROM COTTON
20180155861 · 2018-06-07 ·

An improved method of producing activated carbon fabrics from cotton fabrics involves washing a piece of cotton fabric with a detergent before soaking the washed piece of cotton fabric in an acidic chemical such as phosphoric acid for a specific amount of time, and then drying the soaked piece of cotton fabric in an oven. After the fabric has been dried, it is heated in a furnace which is fed with a flow of nitrogen gas as the temperature of the furnace is gradually increased to a pre-determined temperature and kept at the pre-determined temperature for an extended amount of time, before allowing the temperature to gradually return back to room temperature. After being removed from the furnace and being washed with distilled water to remove any remnants of phosphoric acid, the resulting product is an activated carbon fabric.
