STEEL CORD FOR ELASTOMER REINFORCEMENT

A steel cord for the reinforcement of elastomer products such as elevator belts, conveyor belts, synchronous or timing belts or hoses or tyres is presented. The steel cord comprises strands and monofilaments made of steel filaments. The strands themselves are also made of steel filaments twisted together. The strands form the outer layer of the steel cord. The monofilaments are twisted into the cord with the same lay length and direction as the strands and are positioned in the valleys between the strands on the radial outer side of the steel cord. The steel cord has the advantage that it has a better fill factor and a rounder aspect. Furthermore the monofilaments may act as an early wear indicator of the elastomer product.

A cord (50) comprises: an internal strand (TI) comprising an internal layer (C1), and an external layer (C3); and L>1 external strands (TE) comprising an internal layer (C1) of Q=1 internal wire (F1), an intermediate layer (C2) of M intermediate wires (F2) wound around the internal layer (C1) with a pitch p2, and an external layer (C3) of N external wires (F3) wound around the intermediate layer (C2) with a pitch p3. The external layer (CE) of the cord is wound around the internal layer (CI) of the cord in a direction of winding of the cord (50). Each external layer (C3, C3) of each internal and external strand (TI, TE) is wound in the same direction of winding that is the opposite to the direction of winding of the cord (50). The external layer (CE) of the cord (50) is desaturated, and 0.36(p3p2)/p30.57.

A steel strand (10) comprises a steel core wire (12). This steel core wire (12) is surrounded by steel layer wires (14) that are twisted around the steel core wire (12). The steel core wire (12) is covered with a thick corrosion resistant core coating (16) provided by strip cladding or by metal extrusion. The steel layer wires (14) are covered with a thin corrosion resistant layer coating (18) provided by a hot dip operation or by an electroplating or chemical plating process. The steel strand (10) is compacted so that said steel layer wires (14) have a non-circular cross-section and that the thick corrosion resistant core coating fills the interstices between the steel core wire (12) and the steel layer wires (14) in order to give the steel strand (10) an improved corrosion resistance and increased lifetime.

Each external steel wire strand includes a core steel wire and N external steel wires. The central steel wire, the steel wire layer externally wound on the central steel wire, and the plurality of external steel wire strands are wound into a steel wire rope for conveyor belts in one step. The steel wire layer is externally wound on the outer side of the central steel wire, the external steel wire strands are wound to wrap the outer side of the steel wire layer, and the external steel wire strands are in line contact with the steel wire layer.

A ratio S1/S of the sum S1 of cross-sectional areas of outermost layer sheath filaments constituting an outermost layer sheath of the core strand to the sum S of cross-sectional areas of all filaments constituting the core strand is from 0.69 to 0.74, and a ratio Ps/P of the sum Ps of strengths of the sheath strands to strength P of the cord as a whole is from 0.81 to 0.85.

A ratio dc/ds of a diameter dc of a sheath filament constituting the sheath of the core strand to a diameter ds of an outermost layer sheath filament constituting the outermost layer sheath of the sheath strand is more than 1.25 and not more than 1.50.

A commercial vehicle tire of a radial type of construction with a cross-sectional height of 135 mm to 200 mm, a load index of 121 to 154, a radial-ply casing with at least one casing ply composed of steel cords embedded in rubber and with bead regions with bead cores and bead fillers around which the casing ply runs so as to form turn-ups. The casing ply is reinforced with steel cords of the construction 1+6, wherein the core filament (1) has a diameter (d.sub.1) of 0.19 mm to 0.22 mm and the ply filaments (2) have coinciding diameters (d.sub.2) of 0.17 mm to 0.20 mm, wherein the diameter (d.sub.2) of the ply filaments (2) is less than the diameter (d.sub.1) of the core filament (1) by at least 0.01 mm and wherein, at the crown of the tire, the steel cords are arranged in the casing ply with 60 epdm to 75 epdm.
