Methods of making a paper product can comprise forming a substrate from a first furnish that comprises a plurality of pulp fibers, at least partially dewatering the substrate, treating a second furnish that comprises a plurality of surface enhanced pulp fibers (SEPF) at least by adding one or more enzymes to the second furnish, and sizing the dewatered substrate at least by depositing the treated second furnish onto at least one of opposing first and second surfaces of the dewatered substrate. The SEPF can have a length weighted average fiber length that is greater than or equal to 0.20 millimeters (mm) and an average hydrodynamic specific surface area that is greater than or equal to 10 square meters per gram (m.sup.2/g).

The present invention is directed to a process for manufacturing a nano-coated pulp-based substrate comprising the steps of: a) providing a suspension comprising pulp, said pulp having Schopper Riegler value of at least 70°; b) using the suspension of step a) to form a wet web; c) dewatering and/or drying the wet web to form a substrate; d) reducing surface roughness of the substrate; providing a nano-coating on the surface of the substrate obtained in step d) such that a nano-coating having a thickness in the range of from 0.1 nm to 100 nm is provided on the substrate.

A paper product having improved printing characteristics and a method of making the paper product. This paper product has a fibrous substrate and top layer of surface enhanced pulp fibers that is integrally coupled to the top surface of the fibrous substrate. The paper product is produced by providing an aqueous slurry formed from a blend of cellulosic fibers and water and at least partially dewatering the aqueous slurry of cellulosic fibers and water to form the fibrous substrate. Subsequently, a surface treatment formed from an aqueous composition of water and surface enhanced pulp fibers is applied to the top surface of the fibrous substrate and thereafter the treated fibrous substrate is dried to form a paper product having enhanced printing characteristics.

This paper product has a fibrous substrate and top layer of surface enhanced pulp fibers that is integrally coupled to the top surface of the fibrous substrate. A biodegradable food-grade polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) paper substrate and a method for making the same are provided. The method includes: providing a paper substrate; preparing a first coating material by rendering PVA with a degree of alkalization of 90%-100% and a molecular weight of 100,000-300,000 into an aqueous solution in which the PVA has a weight ratio of 3%-15%; preparing a second coating material by rendering sodium trimetaphosphate into an aqueous solution in which the sodium trimetaphosphate has a molar concentration of 0.05-1 Mol/l; forming a coating layer on a surface of the paper substrate; forming a surface cross-linked layer on the coating layer; and drying. The resulting PVA paper substrate is biodegradable, of food-grade quality, and resistant to water and grease, with a grease resistance higher than or equal to that corresponding to kit No. 6 in a TAPPI T559 pm-96 standard test.

A method includes producing a foam of water, air, a foaming agent, uncooked starch, and a dry strength agent; applying the foam to a first surface of a base embryonic ply web; providing an applied embryonic ply web having a first surface and contacting the first surface of the base web with the first surface of the applied web at an interface to form a combined ply web; and selectively applying vacuum pressure to a second surface of the base web to retain particles of the uncooked starch on or near the first surface, to draw molecules of the dry strength agent into the base web and/or to the first surface of the applied web to retain particles of the uncooked starch in the interface and to draw molecules of the dry strength agent into the applied web.
