High Energy Drying Method to Form a Continuous Polyhydroxyalkanoated Film
20170260416 · 2017-09-14 ·

Methods for applying a polyhydroxyalkaonate (PHA) film to a substrate. The substrate is coated with an aqueous PHA emulsion or dispersion to form a PHA coating. Photonic energy is then applied to the PHA coating on the substrate to remove solvent and melt the PHA to form a continuous film.

SUSPENSIONS INCLUDING CELLULOSE NANOFIBRIL AND POLYESTER

Suspensions can include a polar solvent, sulfonated polyester material dispersed in the polar solvent, and cellulose nanofibril material dispersed in the polar solvent. Suspensions disclosed and contemplated herein leverage polyester that can be used to independently control film formation and rheology. In some instances, polyesters used in suspensions disclosed herein can perform the role of two additives: aqueous thickener and film reinforcement

WATER INSOLUBLE, HIGH MELTING POINT SACCHARIDE FATTY ACID ESTERS (SFAE)

Methods of treating materials, such as cellulose-based materials, to provide barrier properties like water resistance and lipid resistance (OGR), separately or in combination, and particularly at high temperatures, by using bio-based coatings and/or compositions containing a water insoluble, high melting point saccharide fatty acid ester and products obtained by the methods.

A biodegradable packaging material, a method of manufacturing the same, as well as products made of the material wherein the manufacture comprises extrusion onto a fibrous substrate one or more polymer coating layers including at least one layer of a polymer blend consisting of (i) 20-95 wt-% of polylactide having a high melt index of more than 35 g/10 min (210° C.; 2.16 kg), (ii) 5-80 wt-% of polybutylene succinate (PBS) or a biodegradable derivate thereof, and (iii) 0-5 wt-% of one or more polymeric additives. The components of the blend are melted and blended in connection with the extrusion step. The goal is to improve extrudability, increase machine speed in extrusion and maintaining good adhesiveness to the substrate and good heat-sealability of the coating. The products include disposable drinking cups and board trays, as well as sealed carton packages for solids and liquids.
