POROUS GRANULES AND HYDROPHOBIC GRANULES AND RELATED ARTICLES
Granules include a blend of porous, mineral-based granules and additional granules having a hydrophobic polymeric coating. Use of the granules as roofing granules is also disclosed. A construction article includes a substrate, an organic coating, and the roofing granules at least partially embedded in the organic coating. Methods of making and using the construction article are also disclosed.
ROOFING GRANULES AND RELATED ARTICLES
Roofing granules include heat-treated, porous, mineral-based granules having a moisture absorption of at least seven percent by weight and a blend of such heat-treated, porous, mineral-based granules and additional granules having a moisture absorption of less than five percent by weight. Use of the granules as roofing granules is also disclosed. A construction article includes a substrate, an organic coating, and heat-treated, porous, mineral-based aggregate having a moisture absorption of at least seven percent by weight at least partially embedded in the organic coating. A method of making the construction article is also disclosed.
Shingles with a thick appearance
A shingle comprises an overlay, an underlay, and a height increasing material disposed between the overlay and the underlay. The height increasing material includes a first adhesive adhered to the overlay, height increasing granules adhered to the first adhesive, and a second adhesive adhered to the height increasing granules and the underlay. The height increasing material can extend along front ends of tab portions of the overlay, along front cutout edges that extend between tab portions of the overlay, or both.
COATED ROOFING GRANULES, ROOFING MATERIALS MADE THEREFROM AND METHODS OF PREPARING COATED ROOFING GRANULES
This invention relates to coated roofing granules, roofing materials made therefrom, and methods of preparing such coated roofing granules. By coating roofing granules with an aqueous coating that includes water, a silicon-containing oligomer or polymer, and an acrylic resin, coated roofing granules can be prepared that exhibit reduced staining as compared to traditional roofing granules that are treated with petroleum oil.
High speed granule delivery system and method
A high speed granule delivery system and method is disclosed for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated strip in the manufacture of roofing shingles. The system includes a granule hopper and a rotationally indexable pocket wheel in the bottom of the hopper. A series of pockets are formed in the circumference of the wheel and the pockets are separated by raised lands. A seal on the bottom of the hopper seals against the raised lands as the wheel is indexed. In use, the pockets of the pocket wheel drive through and are filled with granules in the bottom of the hopper. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated strip below and its granules fall onto the strip to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt. The speed at which the wheel is indexed is coordinated with the speed of the asphalt coated strip so that granules and strip are moving at about the same forward speed or at a preselected ratio of speeds when the granules fall onto the strip. Well defined patterns of granules are possible at high production rates.
Roofing materials with increased wind uplift resistance and methods of making thereof
This invention, in embodiments, relates to a roofing material having (a) a front surface, (b) a back surface, and (c) a sealant attachment zone disposed on at least the front surface of the roofing material, the sealant attachment zone including surfacing media that comprise at least one of mineral particles, polymeric particles, and combinations thereof. The sealant attachment zone has an average surface coverage of the surfacing media of 30% to 70%. The roofing material exhibits an increased wind uplift resistance, as measured according to ASTM D6381, as compared to a roofing material without a sealant attachment zone having an average surface coverage of surfacing media of 30% to 70%.
CONTROLLED PARTICLE DEPOSITION FOR A ROOFING SHINGLE
A method includes obtaining a glass mat having a first side and a second side opposite the first side. The method includes coating the first side of the glass mat with a molten asphalt. The method includes obtaining a plurality of particles. The method further includes depositing the particles on the first side of the asphalt coated substrate. The depositing includes controlling a location of the plurality of particles on the first side of the asphalt coated substrate using an electrostatic generator, an electromagnetic generator, or a piezoelectric depositor. The method further includes forming a roofing shingle from the asphalt coated substrate having the plurality of particles as deposited.
FIRE-RESISTANT MODIFIED BITUMINOUS COMPOSITIONS AND ROOFING PRODUCTS
The present disclosure related generally to a bituminous composition suitable for use in roofing material, the bituminous composition a bituminous component comprising an asphalt component in an mount in the range of 75-95 wt% of the bituminous component, a rubber polymer in an amount of 5-20 wt% of the bituminous component, and a polyolefin wax in an amount up to 5 wt% of the bituminous component; and dispersed within the bituminous component, a filler component comprising at least one of both huntite and hydromagnesite; wollastonite; and both magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate, wherein the total amount of the huntite, hydromagnesite, wollastonite, magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate is in the range of 20-70 wt% of the bituminous component.
Polymer modified asphalt roofing material
A shingle coating asphalt composition is provided that is produced from a paving grade asphalt. The asphalt composition comprises a paving-grade asphalt that has been modified with one or more polymer additives; and a secondary additive comprising one or more of a viscosity reducing agent, a wax, a salt of a fatty acid ester, and an amide of a fatty acid. The shingle coating asphalt coating composition is used to make a shingle. The shingle includes a substrate, the asphalt, and roofing granules.
