The plurality of rods are arranged in a skewed tetrahedral geometry, which causes the plurality of stair segments to form a helical structure when the plurality of stair segments are coupled together. The plurality of rods form a spine on an underside of the plurality of stair segments. A tread is coupled to each of the stair segments. In alternate embodiments, the curved staircase may be formed from sheet metal creased to form a plurality of linear support locations and connecting nodes.

The design uses fixed-length stringers and adjustable height risers. The angle between the stringers to the floor changes depending on the height of the adjustable height risers and story height. The angles of the steps, stringers and banisters/handrails are configured to adjust with respect to the other components with the aid of turnbuckles and movable joints or bolts, thus keeping the steps and landings level at different story heights. This enables homeowners, generally exempt from contractor license requirements, to use a prefabricated kit to build code-compliant stairways in their homes with little or no staircase cutting or part modification.

The invention relates to a staircase element comprising a tubular mast erectable to a vertical position onto the floor or a corresponding surface of a stair hall, and fillable with concrete; stair step elements fastened at their first end stepwise to the mast and branching off radially from the mast; at least one tubular stringer fastened to the second end of the stair step elements, fillable with concrete and connectable with fastening members to at least one wall of the stair hall, for supporting the stair step elements at their second end and for anchoring the staircase element to a building. The invention also relates to a method for building a staircase.
