A vertically adjustable railing having first and second elongate balusters each with a first and second ends, the balusters having a first connection elements at their first ends and second connection elements along their length. An elongate handrail is pivotally connected at its first end to the first connection element of the first baluster and pivotally connected at its second end to the first connection element of the second baluster. An elongate lower rail having a first end and a second end is pivotally connected at its first end to the second connection element of the first baluster and pivotally connected at its second end to the second connection element of the second baluster. A distance between the first end and the second connection element of the first baluster is greater than the distance between the first end and the second connection element of the second baluster.

In a method for modernizing a building, a former stairwell of the building is converted such that an elevator shaft of an elevator system to be constructed can be provided in the former stairwell. The elevator shaft is provided in the former stairwell of the building such that stepless access is facilitated to specific floors of the building from an elevator car of the elevator system, which car can be provided in the elevator shaft. A new staircase is constructed outside the former stairwell. In addition, a former staircase is removed from the former stairwell. Furthermore, access bridges are disposed next to the elevator shaft in the former stairwell, thereby enabling flush access from the new staircase to the specific floors.

A free-standing modular egress system comprising various elements of a core frame, a staircase, a handrail, a long landing, a short landing, a door frame, and a means for attachment, for use in construction of hospitality and residential building construction. The system is prefabricated off-site which makes the onsite installation easier and capable of being installed prior to construction of the building.

In some implementations, a modular furniture cabinet includes a top flooring affixed to static furniture and supported by one or more structures. The top surface of a bottom flooring, backs of the static furniture pieces, and a bottom surface of the top flooring define a storage space, and the dynamic furniture pieces substantially reside in the storage space when the modular furniture cabinet is in a closed configuration.

In some implementations, a modular furniture cabinet includes a top flooring affixed to static furniture and supported by one or more structures.
