AUTOMATED SPOOLING
A system that is configured to automatically control a spooling of a drum of a deployment unit used in hydrocarbon recovery operations.
CONTACTLESS SENSOR MONITORING OF A DRILL STRING CONTROLLED BY A DRILLING PROGRAM
A monitoring system for a drill string controlled by a drilling program may include a contactless sensor arranged to capture data at a second time. The data may be associated with a parameter at a position along a drill line associated with the drill string. The system may include a processor operatively connected to the contactless sensor. The processor may be configured to access a machine learning (ML) model that is trained using the data captured at a first time, prior to the second time, and an image analysis algorithm. The processor may be configured to identify, using the trained ML model, a condition pertaining to the drill string based on interpreting the data captured at the second time. The processor may be configured to cause an adjustment to the drilling program based on the identified condition.
Monitoring Equipment of a Plurality of Drill Rigs
Systems and methods for monitoring equipment of multiple drill rigs. Each drill rig comprises multiple equipment units collectively operable to perform well construction operations to construct a well. An example monitoring system may be operable to receive operational data from each drill rig, determine operational status of each drill rig based at least partially on the operational data, and determine operational health indicators for each equipment unit of each drill rig based at least partially on the operational data. Each operational health indicator is indicative of operational health of a corresponding equipment unit with respect to a different operational health category. The monitoring system may be further operable to display the operational status for each drill rig, including the operational health indicators for each equipment unit of each drill rig, as a single page on a video output device.
Controlling Release of Torsional Energy from a Drill String
Apparatus and methods for controlling release of torsional energy from a drill string having a lower portion that is stuck against a subterranean formation and a top end rotated by a top drive. The method may include decreasing a rotational speed set-point of the top drive, decreasing a torque set-point of the top drive, and/or decreasing flow rate of drilling mud being pumped downhole via the drill string, thereby decreasing torque output by a mud motor rotating a drill bit. The method may further include lifting the drill string to free the drill string. Decreasing the torque set-point of the top drive may comprise decreasing the torque set-point of the top drive to a minimum torque level that the top drive can output. Decreasing the rotational speed set-point of the top drive may comprise decreasing the rotational speed set-point of the top drive to zero.
APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATED SLIDE DRILLING
An automated slide drilling system (ASDS) may be used with a drilling rig system to control slide drilling. The ASDS may autonomously control slide drilling without user input during the slide drilling. The ASDS may further support a transition from rotary drilling to slide drilling to rotary drilling without user input during the transitions. The ASDS may also support user input and user notifications for various steps to enable manual or semi-manual control of slide drilling by a driller or an operator.
Spoolable splice connector and method for tubing encapsulated cable
A splice connector for a spoolable tube includes a center portion having an outer diameter equal to an outer diameter of the tube. A longitudinal extension extends in each longitudinal direction outwardly from the center portion. The longitudinal extensions have a plurality of spaced apart segments having an outer diameter equal to an inner diameter of the tube and a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart crimp grooves disposed between the spaced apart segments. An inner diameter of the splice connector is selected such that when the splice connector is assembled to the tube on each longitudinal extension, the splice connector is bendable to a radius of curvature of a winch reel used to deploy the tube into a wellbore.
Linear Motor Hoisting System
Systems and methods for hoisting a top drive of a drilling rig. An example system includes a hoisting system having a linear electric motor operable to raise and lower the top drive. An example method includes commencing operation of a processing device to cause operation of the linear electric motor to raise and lower the top drive. The linear electric motor may have a stator connected to and extending vertically along a mast of the drilling rig, and a rotor connected to the top drive and operable to move relative to the stator. The rotor may be connected to the top drive via one or more flexible lines.
Direct Drive Drawworks
A direct drive drawworks having a first electric motor comprising a first output shaft, a second electric motor comprising a second output shaft, and a drum for storing a flexible line. The drum may be disposed between the first electric motor and the second electric motor. The first output shaft and the second output shaft may each be connected to the drum. The first electric motor and the second electric motor may be collectively operable to rotate the drum. The first output shaft and the second output shaft may be connected to the drum such that the drum rotates at the same speed as the first output shaft and the second output shaft.
PIPE SPOOLING DEPLOYMENT EQUIPMENT SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Techniques for implementing and/or operating a system that includes a pipe drum, which has a drum shaft and a drum body that enables a pipe segment to be spooled on the pipe drum, and pipe deployment equipment. The pipe deployment equipment includes a brake disc, which has a shaft socket that is keyed to matingly interlock with the drum shaft to facilitate tying rotation of the pipe drum with rotation of the brake disc, and a spooling assembly that includes a motor shaft, in which the spooling assembly ties rotation of the motor shaft with the rotation of the brake disc to enable the pipe deployment equipment to actively rotate the brake disc in a first direction to facilitate spooling the pipe segment off of the pipe drum, to actively rotate the brake disc in a second direction to facilitate spooling the pipe segment onto the pipe drum, or both.
Interlock for a drill rig and method for operating a drill rig
An interlock between a drawworks and a segment hoist includes a sensor for sensing a position of the segment hoist. An interlock signal is generated by the sensor for sensing the position of the segment hoist and is reflective of the position of the segment hoist. A lock operably connected to the drawworks receives the interlock signal and disables operation of the drawworks if the interlock signal meets a predetermined criterion. A method for operating a drill rig includes operating a drawworks to raise and lower a drill string and operating a segment hoist. The method further includes sensing a position of the segment hoist, generating an interlock signal that reflects the position of the segment hoist, and disabling the drawworks if the interlock signal meets a predetermined criterion.
