Vortex controlled variable flow resistance device and related tools and methods
A vortex-controlled variable flow resistance device ideal for use in a backpressure tool for advancing drill string in extended reach downhole operations. The characteristics of the pressure waves generated by the device are controlled by the growth and decay of vortices in the vortex chamber(s) of a flow path. The flow path is designed to produce alternating primary and secondary vorticesone clockwise and one counter-clockwisewhere the primary vortex is stronger and produces higher backpressure than the secondary vortex. This in turn generates alternating weak and strong pressure pulses in the drill string. The weak pulses may be barely perceptible so that the effective frequency of the pulses is determined by the stronger primary vortices.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR FREEING STUCK PIPE
Systems and methods for unsticking a tubular string in a subterranean well that is a stuck pipe include securing a circulation sub to an uphole end of the tubular string outside of the subterranean well. The buoyancy of the tubular string is increased by delivering a replacement fluid through the circulation sub and into a bore of the tubular string. The replacement fluid displaces an operating fluid located within the bore of the tubular string. A density of the replacement fluid is less than a density of the operating fluid. Conventional operations for unsticking the tubular string can be performed. The replacement fluid in the bore of the tubular string can be replaced with the operating fluid, and the replacement fluid can be delivered back out of the subterranean well.
Automated Pump-down
An apparatus and method for performing automated pump-down operations. An apparatus may include a control system configured to be communicatively connected with a fluid pump disposed at a wellsite surface and with a conveyance device disposed at the wellsite surface. The control system may be operable to cause the conveyance device to unwind a conveyance line connected with a tool string disposed within a wellbore, and cause the fluid pump to pump a fluid into the wellbore such that the fluid moves the tool string along the wellbore while the conveyance device unwinds the conveyance line.
Rheological fluid lock of shaft to housing
A rheological lock apparatus includes a fluid chamber formed within a housing between a pair of seals. The fluid chamber contains a rheological fluid. An inner surface of the housing has a first plurality of splines projecting into the fluid chamber and extending longitudinally along a longitudinal dimension of the chamber. A driveshaft extends axially through the chamber such that the pair of seals are sealed against the driveshaft. The driveshaft includes a second plurality of splines. A field generator is coupled to one of the driveshaft or the housing to generate a field through the rheological fluid during times when the housing is substantially immobile in a borehole.
DOWNHOLE DRILLING APPARATUS AND METHOD OF CONTROL THEREOF
A downhole drilling system for reducing impact of vibration comprises a drill string having a bottom hole assembly (BHA) and a controller configured to control the downhole drilling system. The BHA includes a measurement sub configured to measure one or more of lateral, torsional, and axial vibrations. In this system, the controller controls the downhole drilling system based on a drilling environmental profile including drilling parameters of one or more of the lateral, torsional, and axial vibrations and further based on a vibration mode and a vibration level of the one or more of the lateral, torsional, and axial vibrations determined from the drilling environmental profile.
Method to mitigate a stuck pipe during drilling operations
Provided are systems and methods for freeing differentially stuck pipe via the in-situ release of fluids from fluid-releasing tanks coupled to a centralizer or stabilizer of a pipe. Fluid-releasing tanks may be coupled to a centralizer or stabilizer of a pipe and located around the circumference of the pipe. Nozzles may be connected to the fluid-releasing tanks to enable the in-situ release of fluid from the fluid-releasing tanks. Various mechanisms may be used to open the nozzles and release the fluid from the fluid-releasing tanks.
Method and apparatus for stuck pipe mitigation
Systems and methods for moving a tubular string within a subterranean well include a collar tool assembly that has a tubular body. The tubular body has an inner bore that is in fluid communication with an inner bore of the tubular string. An outer cavity is located radially outward of the inner bore. An injection port assembly extends from the outer cavity to an outer diameter surface of the tubular body and can move between an injection port closed position and an injection port open position. A hydraulic system can force a treatment fluid of the outer cavity out of the tubular body when the injection port is in the injection port open position. An injection port programmable logic controller is in signal communication with the hydraulic system and can command the injection port assembly to move between the injection port closed position and the injection port open position.
Systems and Methods for Monitoring and/or Predicting Sagging Tendencies of Fluids
Systems and methods measure one or more rheological properties and/or parameters of a fluid and establish at least one correlation between the measured one or more rheological properties and/or parameters. The systems and methods may correlate the measured one or more rheological properties and/or parameters to static aging results to establish the at least one correlation between the one or more rheological properties and/or parameters of the fluid. The systems and methods may predict at least one sagging tendency of the fluid based on the established at least one correlation and may measure and/or monitor static sagging of the fluid based on the predicted at least one sagging tendency of the fluid. The systems and methods may guide fluid treatment of the fluid or produce a mud system based on the predicted at least one sagging tendency of the fluid.
MODIFIED TORQUE GENERATOR AND METHODS OF USE
An apparatus for controlling tool face and methods of use with a torque generator connected to a drill string for drilling linear and nonlinear subterranean bore segments. In some embodiments, the apparatus and methodologies of use comprise a tool controller having an outer housing independently rotatable from and extension conduit extending therethrough and forming an annulus therebetween. The tool controller may provide for a first fluid pathway for allowing a bypass portion of fluids to flow through the torque generator, and a second fluid pathway through the annulus for allowing a torque generator portion of fluids to flow through the annulus. In some embodiments, at least one fluid flow restrictor may be provided within the annulus to controllable cause a cascading reduction in torque generator fluid pressure as it flows through the annulus, allowing high resolution tool face control over a larger (and tunable) range of drill string speed (rpm) set points.
