Active alternator control in a downhole tool string
A downhole system includes a drill string having a drilling fluid flow channel and at least one turbine alternator deployed in the flow channel. The turbine alternator is configured to convert flowing drilling fluid to electrical power. A voltage bus is configured to receive electrical power from the turbine alternator and at least one electrical motor is configured to receive electrical power from the voltage bus. An electronic controller is configured to provide active control of the turbine alternator via processing a desired speed of the electrical motor to generate a desired torque current and feeding the desired torque current forward to the turbine alternator. The turbine alternator is responsive to the desired torque current such that it modifies the electrical power provided to the voltage bus in response to the desired torque.
ADVANCED UNDERGROUND HOMING SYSTEM, APPARATUS AND METHOD
A boring tool that is moved by a drill string to form an underground bore. A transmitter transmits a time varying dipole field as a homing field from the boring tool. A pitch sensor detects a pitch orientation of the boring tool. A homing receiver is positionable at a target location for detecting the homing field to produce a set of flux measurements. A processing arrangement uses the pitch orientation and flux measurements with a determined length of the drill string to determine a vertical homing command for use in controlling depth in directing the boring tool to the target location such that the vertical homing command is generated with a particular accuracy at a given range between the transmitter and the homing receiver and which would otherwise be generated with the particular accuracy for a standard range, different from the particular range. An associated system and method are described.
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING A PLURALITY OF DRILL RIGS
Disclosed herein are a control method and system. The system includes: a deactivation control; a control centre controller for storing an association between the deactivation control and a selected set of mine sites; a plurality of autonomous drill rigs, each drill rig having a drill shutdown module to disable a function of the respective drill rig upon receipt of a deactivation command; and a mine site controller associated with each mine site, each mine site controller being coupled to all autonomous drill rigs located at the respective mine site with which the mine site controller is associated. Activating the deactivation control transmits a deactivation command from the deactivation control to the control centre controller. The control centre controller forwards the deactivation command to a mine site controller associated with each mine site in the set of mine sites for distribution to all autonomous drill rigs at that mine site.
Downhole Tools With Power Utilization Apparatus During Flow-Off State
A drilling assembly for use in drilling of a wellbore is disclosed that in one non-limiting embodiment includes a device that detects a flow-off state, a power generator that generates electrical energy in response to a fluid flowing through the drilling assembly during the flow-off state, and a circuit that utilizes such power to perform one or more selected operations in response to the detection of the flow-off state, including, but not limited to, storing data in a memory; shutting certain devices in the drilling assembly and parking a device in a desired position.
REAL TIME DRILLING MODEL UPDATES AND PARAMETER RECOMMENDATIONS WITH CALIPER MEASUREMENTS
The disclosure recognizes the benefit in determining the dimensions of a wellbore for updating a performance model and changing drilling parameters in real time for steering a drill bit. The disclosed system and method provide improved control for steering a drill bit by obtaining dimension measurements of the wellbore proximate a drill bit and considering the dimension measurements to adjust one or more of the drilling parameters in real time. A method of drilling a wellbore a drilling system, and a drilling tool are disclosed herein. In one example, the method includes: (1) receiving dimension measurements of a wellbore during drilling of the wellbore by a drilling tool, (2) updating an existing performance model of the drilling tool in real time based on the dimension measurements, and (3) operating the drilling tool based on the updated performance model.
Determining drilling state for trajectory control
Methods are provided for determining the drilling state of a downhole tool and controlling the trajectory of the downhole tool in a wellbore during a drilling operation. One method may include identifying a drilling parameter indicative of the drilling state of the downhole tool in the wellbore. The method may also include determining the drilling state based on the identified drilling parameter. The identified drilling parameter may be obtained from a sensor communicatively coupled with a processor and disposed in the wellbore. The method may further include adjusting the operation of an integral controller based on the determined drilling state to control the trajectory of the downhole tool in the wellbore during the drilling operation.
