The autonomous material handling units include a plurality of small capacity haulage vehicles, each having a maximum payload capacity of 80 tonnes or less. The autonomous material handling units are configured to be controlled by a control centre via the communications network.

A method and system for mine design utilising mathematical modelling and optimisation based on mathematical modelling of connected bubbles. A mathematical model, based on mathematical modelling of behavior of connected bubbles, is applied to the 3D block model for a mine to cluster geometric elements from the 3D block model based on physical location and properties of the physical material for each of the geometric elements, and selecting at least one set of a plurality of contiguous geometric elements for extraction based on the clustering. Each set of a plurality of contiguous blocks can be associated with a phase of a mining process.

The system includes: a deactivation control; a control centre controller for storing an association between the deactivation control and a selected set of mine sites; a plurality of autonomous drill rigs, each drill rig having a drill shutdown module to disable a function of the respective drill rig upon receipt of a deactivation command; and a mine site controller associated with each mine site, each mine site controller being coupled to all autonomous drill rigs located at the respective mine site with which the mine site controller is associated. Activating the deactivation control transmits a deactivation command from the deactivation control to the control centre controller. The control centre controller forwards the deactivation command to a mine site controller associated with each mine site in the set of mine sites for distribution to all autonomous drill rigs at that mine site.

A method for mining narrow vein deposit of ore, the narrow vein deposit having a hanging wall and a foot wall, the method comprising: drilling a pilot hole into the narrow vein deposit along a path substantially centrally between the hanging wall and the foot wall to a depth within the vein; following the pilot hole with a larger diameter drilling assembly to fragment the ore into drill cuttings; circulating the drill cuttings to a wellhead; and collecting the drill cuttings for processing to recover the ore therefrom.

A method for mining narrow vein deposit of ore, the narrow vein deposit having a hanging wall and a foot wall, the method comprising: drilling a pilot hole into the narrow vein deposit along a path substantially centrally between the hanging wall and the foot wall to a depth within the vein; following the pilot hole with a larger diameter drilling assembly to fragment the ore into drill cuttings; circulating the drill cuttings to a wellhead; and collecting the drill cuttings for processing to recover the ore therefrom.
