Load distribution and absorption underlayment system with transition features

A load distributing and absorbing system that lies below a barrier layer that is exposed to percussive and/or point-applied forces. The load distributing and absorbing system has one or more load distributing and absorbing tiles. At least some of the tiles have an underlayment infrastructure positioned below a barrier layer. The underlayment infrastructure includes one or more hat-shaped absorbing members. Each has a ceiling primarily for load distribution and a curvilinear wall primarily for load absorption extending from the ceiling. A transition feature is provided to smoothly graduate from one height and type of load distributing and absorbing tile to a load distributing and absorbing tile of another type and height. He system distributes and absorbs forces applied to the barrier layer over a broad area when applied either on a seam between adjacent tiles or within a tile.

Protective enclosure for interior and exterior spaces

Disclosed herein is a protective enclosure deployable within an interior space such as a school classroom or an office, or an exterior space. The deployable protective enclosure is to protect multiple occupants against projectiles such as flying or falling debris resulting from a natural disaster such as a tornado, hurricane or earthquake, or rounds fired. Occupants may be corralled into the protective enclosure and be protected against projectiles. The protective enclosure comprises three or more articulated partitions comprising ballistic materials or high-impact resistant materials. The protective enclosure may be affixed to one wall or two walls at a corner of a classroom, office or other space. The articulated partitions may be readily and rapidly secured in a protective configuration, forming a triangular, square or other polygonal enclosure. When not in use, the partitions may be folded and stowed against the walls.

A safety portal system for use in existing building, such as schools. The safety portal system includes a first portal section. The first portal section includes a first wall and a second wall, a first open end, a floor portion and a ceiling portion, the at least one open end defined by an outer edge. In addition to the first portal section, the safety portal system includes a second portal section. The second portal section includes a first wall and a second wall, at least one open end, a floor portion and a ceiling portion. The at least one open end of the second portal section is defined by an inner edge that cooperates and engages with the outer edge of the first portal section to create a protective overlap section. A method of installing the safety portal system includes positioning the safety portal system in a desired building and assembling the safety portal system. The safety portal system can then be secured in its desired location within the building.
