BIDIRECTIONAL INERTIA LATCH FOR VEHICLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS

A vehicle includes a latch mechanism configured to retain a movable interior component when the latch mechanism is latched. A movable latch release is operably connected to the latch mechanism. A bidirectional inertia lock includes an actuator member that unlatches the latch mechanism, and an inertia lock member that moves from an unlocked position to a locked position in response to vehicle acceleration in a fore-aft direction and a side-to-side direction. The inertia lock member prevents movement of the actuator member to the actuated position when the inertia lock member is in the locked position.

The lid can pivot upward from a rearward portion of the seatback in the fold down position, as the lid transitions to the open position.

A seatback for a vehicle comprises: a lid having a closed position preventing access to a storage area and an open position allowing access to the storage area; and a locking element having an engaged position that prevents the lid from transitioning from the closed position to the open position and a disengaged position that does not prevent the lid from transitioning from the closed position to the open position; wherein, the locking element transitions from the disengaged position to the engaged position via the force of gravity when the seatback transitions from a fold down position to an upright position, and transitions from the engaged position to the disengaged position when the seatback transitions from the upright position to fold down position. The lid can pivot upward from a rearward portion of the seatback in the fold down position, as the lid transitions to the open position.

The catch mechanism may move from the blocking position to a second blocking position to prevent the cover from opening. The catch mechanism may release the cover to facilitate opening of the cover in response to (a) a first actuating force applied to the cover; (b) release of the first actuating force; and (c) a second actuating force applied to the cover.
