Downhole tool assembly
A method of latching a production tubing to a packer in a wellbore, an assembly, and a connection, of which the method includes lowering the production tubing into the wellbore, the production tubing being coupled to a first body comprising a slot and a blocking member. The production tubing is lowered until a lug on a second body contacts the blocking member, the second body being coupled to a packer. The method includes raising the production tubing relative to the packer which causes the lug to move out of contact with the blocking member, lowering the production tubing into the wellbore again until the lug contacts and removes the blocking member, and rotating the production tubing such that the lug advances into the slot, so as to latch the production tubing and the packer together.
Hydraulically actuated safety sub
A safety joint having threads with a first handedness, for example right-handed threads, to connect the safety joint to an upper drill pipe portion and a lower drill pipe portion. The safety joint includes a releasable threaded connection having a second handedness inverse of the first handedness. The safety joint also includes a hydraulically actuated piston sleeve that locks rotation across the releasable threaded connection. Disconnecting the upper drill pipe portion from the lower drill pipe portion is achieved by moving the piston sleeve to a position wherein the piston sleeve does not transmit rotation across the releasable threaded connection, and rotating the upper drill pipe portion in the first handedness direction to unscrew the releasable threaded connection.
AUTOMATIC DRILL PIPE COUPLING DETECTION CONTROL SYSTEM
A system for automatic detection of drill pipe coupling on a drilling machine is disclosed. The system may include a rotary head, a drill pipe, a display, and a controller. The controller may be configured to: automatically identify a coupling or decoupling condition of the drill pipe; monitor motion and forces associated with the rotary head during a coupling or decoupling action of the drill pipe; automatically identify a fully coupled or fully decoupled condition of the coupling or decoupling action based on the monitored motion and forces of the rotary head; terminate the coupling action based on the identification of the fully coupled or fully decoupled condition; and update the display to indicate the fully coupled or fully decoupled condition of the drill pipe.
Apparatus for Connecting Drilling Components Between Rig and Riser
A riser extending from a floating rig has a riser manifold. A rig manifold can be manipulated by an arm to couple in an automated manner to the riser manifold when running the riser from the rig. The riser and rig manifolds have mechanical connectors that mechanically connect them. Additionally, the manifolds have flow couplings mating together for conducting flow in at least one flow connection, and the manifolds control couplings mating together for conducting control in at least one flow connection. At least one of the manifolds has at least one valve controllable with the at least one control connection and configured to control fluid communication for the at least one flow connection between at least one rig flow line and an internal passage of the riser.
Ground Drilling Device and Method for Drilling in Soil
A ground drilling device for drilling in soil by means of a drill string, wherein the ground drilling device comprises a drilling carriage and a sled movable in translation on the drilling carriage, and on the sled there is arranged a holder a) for the screwed connection of a rod section to the drill string, or b) for the screwed detachment of a rod section from the drill string, wherein the holder can move in translation relative to the sled in order to compensate for a change in the position of the holder caused by the screwing process.
Actuating force control for downhole tools
An apparatus for temporarily connecting a first tool part to a second tool part of a tool includes a plurality of frangible members connecting the first tool part to the second tool part. The frangible members break only after being subjected to a predetermined applied force. The frangible members cooperate to differentially resist loading applied to the tool.
Casing string torque transfer and suspension system and method for mandrel casing hangers
A casing string torque transfer and suspension system and method for mandrel casing hangers. A running tool for a mandrel casing hanger suspending a casing string includes a pair of rotary drive rings secured around the running tool, a torque transfer ring of the pair of drive rings including a series of sloping teeth that removably couple to the mandrel casing hanger, the drive rings transferring torque to the casing string to rotate the casing string in a right-handed direction during one of running of the casing string, cementing of the casing string or a combination thereof, and the pair of rotary drive rings transferring axial loads to the casing string when the running tool is threaded to the mandrel casing hanger. Rotation of the rotary drive rings in a left-handed direction retracts the rotary drive rings as the running tool separates from the mandrel casing hanger.
Rod string latching tool without integral release mechanism and method for use of same
In an oilwell produced by a downhole pump operated by the reciprocation of a string of rods disposed within a string of tubing, a system connects an upper section of the string of rods to a plunger assembly. The system has an upper mechanism attached to the upper section of the string of rods, where the upper mechanism has a housing member having an internal bore section having an approximate inverted conical profile. The upper mechanism has a slip member which is configured to be received into the inverted conical profile. A lower mechanism attaches to the plunger assembly. The lower mechanism has an upward end comprising a pin which, upon engagement by the upper mechanism, is received into the slip member and firmly retained within the slip member. Once the pin is engaged within the slip member, the pin is retained within the slip member until it can be manually released.
Combined multi-coupler for top drive
In one embodiment, a coupling system for a top drive and a tool includes a housing of the top drive having a bore therethrough, an adapter of the tool, a latch member at least partially disposed within the housing and radially movable between an extended position and a retracted position, wherein the latch member is configured to longitudinally couple the housing to the adapter, and a lock member at least partially disposed within the housing and longitudinally movable relative to the housing, wherein the lock member is configured to move the latch member between the extended and the retracted positions.
WELL ACCESS TOOL
A tool for gaining lateral access to a well includes a head portion configured to advance axially forwardly relative to a lateral access passage. The tool includes a first shaft and a shaft assembly including a second shaft. The second shaft is at least partly received in the first shaft so as to be axially forwardly moveable therewith. In use, axial forward movement of the first and second shafts causes forward advancement of the head portion. The second shaft is axially forwardly moveable relative to the first shaft. The first shaft includes an internal thread and the shaft assembly includes an external thread engaging the internal thread of the first shaft so that relative rotation of the internal and external threads causes the axial forward movement of the second shaft relative to the first shaft without rotation of the second shaft relative to the first shaft.
