ACTIVATION OF DOWNHOLE MECHANICAL DEVICE WITH INCLINATION AND/OR CHANGE IN RPM

An activation control module utilizes gravity and/or centrifugal acceleration to move a mechanical element that controls, activates or deactivates a mechanical or hydraulic mechanism, for use with a downhole tool such as a drilling tool or reamer in a wellbore. In embodiments, the activation control module described herein may utilize a combination of centrifugal acceleration and/or gravity due to an inclination of the downhole tool to move a valve, which turns off pressure to a hydro-mechanical system. The activation control modules may be utilized in applications where very little space is available for larger mechanisms. Further, the activation control modules do not require expensive and complex electro-mechanical systems, reducing or eliminating the need for batteries, wiring, electronics, motors, pumps and the like. Moreover, the activation control modules described herein do not require the use of a turbine, a centrifugal clutch or a linear actuator.

Certain aspects and features of the disclosure relate to a hydraulic connector for use in a wellbore, for example, with or as part of a disconnect tool. The hydraulic connector can isolate hydraulic fluids in upper and lower hydraulic lines using hydraulic pistons. The pistons in the upper and lower parts of the hydraulic connector interconnect mechanically when the connector is engaged and communicate pressure without transferring hydraulic fluid across the interface. The hydraulic fluid can therefore remain confined within the upper and lower hydraulic lines even when the disconnect tool is disengaged, reducing or eliminating incidents of hydraulic fluid leaking or spilling into the wellbore.

Downhole Tool

A downhole tool includes a housing; a first piston arranged within the housing such that it can move axially under the action of fluid flowing through the tool; and an indexer configured to control axial movement of the first piston between a first, second and third axial position. The indexer is configured such that the first piston can be selectively moved into the third position in accordance with a variation of a flow of fluid through the tool. A second piston is movable between a closed position in which fluid flowing through the tool is restricted from communicating with an activation chamber and an open position in which fluid flowing through the tool is permitted to communicate with the activation chamber; wherein the second piston is configured to move between the closed position and the open position in response to the first piston moving to the third axial position.

Hydraulically activated setting tool and method

A sub connects a gun string to a hydraulically activated setting tool for setting an auxiliary tool in a well. The sub includes a housing that prevents a well fluid from entering inside the housing; a plug that covers a hole made in a wall of the housing; and an explosive mechanism located inside the housing and configured to break the plug to open the hole to achieve fluid communication between an outside and the inside of the sub.

Single-line control system for a well tool

A control system can include a resettable chamber and a bidirectional valve. The bidirectional valve can be switchable between (i) a first configuration for enabling fluid flow from the control line into a first port of a well tool and from a second port of the well tool into the resettable chamber, and (ii) a second configuration for enabling fluid flow from the control line into the second port of the well tool and from the first port of the well tool into the resettable chamber. The bidirectional valve can be switched from the first configuration to the second configuration in response to pressure being applied to the control line.

RELEASE TOOL FOR DOWNHOLE OPERATIONS

A downhole tool for connecting and releasing portions of a tool string includes a housing; an electronics assembly; an activation mechanism; a valve assembly and a set of retainer dogs to connect and release a neck of another tool. The downhole tool may also include one or more measurement sensors for measuring a parameter and transferring one or more measured parameter values to the surface of the well.

WELLBORE APPARATUS FOR SETTING A DOWNHOLE TOOL

A method and apparatus for a locking system for a downhole tool comprising: a first portion having a plurality of displaceable members, a second portion disposed around the first portion; a locked position wherein axial movement between the members is prevented; and an unlocked position wherein axial movement between the members is permitted.

Hydraulically activated setting tool and method

A hydraulically activated setting tool for setting an auxiliary tool in a well, the setting tool including a housing that prevents a well fluid from entering inside the housing; a floating piston placed inside the housing and closing an end of a pressure chamber; an attached piston placed inside the housing and configured to actuate the auxiliary tool; a fluid chamber located between the floating piston and the attached piston, wherein the fluid chamber holds a fluid; and a communication element configured to establish a fluid communication between an outside and an inside of the housing. The fluid communication makes a well fluid in the well to directly act on the floating piston.
