SYSTEMS AND METHODS TO CONTROL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING FOR HYDROCARBON WELLS
Embodiments of systems and methods to control directional drilling in borehole drilling for hydrocarbon wells are disclosed. An actual toolface orientation measurement value and an actual downhole torque on bit (DTOB) or actual downhole weight on bit (DWOB) measurement value for a drill string positioned in a borehole are determined. Responsive to a comparison of target measurement values and actual measurement values, error values are determined. A control command for one or more of a top drive, a drawworks, and a mud pump responsive to the DTOB or DWOB error value and the toolface orientation error value is determined. Additionally, one or more of the top drive, the drawworks, and the mud pump are operated responsive to the control command thereby to correct a toolface orientation of the drill string.

TECHNIQUES FOR CALIBRATING BOREHOLE PROPAGATION MODEL FOR DIRECTION DRILLING IN REAL TIME
Current disclosure proposes calibration methodology that uses the knowledge learned from historical data and real-time data to update a simplified physics-based borehole propagation model for real time steering control of a directional drilling system. The proposed methodology updates model parameters of the simplified physics-based model in real time through a process of setting up and optimizing an objective function, which indicates the difference between the estimated trajectory and the feedback from the real-time data. Penalizing terms, which prevent the parameters from deviating drastically from the prior knowledge of the parameter, and various components of the objective function are learned from the historical data. As a result, the updated model can accurately estimate and predict the system behavior allowing an input sequence of the system to be accurately mapped to the output response.
RANGING TO AN ELECTROMAGNETIC TARGET WITHOUT TIMING
A method for magnetic ranging includes switching an electromagnet deployed in a target wellbore between at least first and second states and acquiring a plurality of magnetic field measurements at a magnetic field sensor deployed on a drill string in a drilling wellbore while the electromagnet is switching. The magnetic field measurements may be sorted into at least first and second sets corresponding to the first and second states of the electromagnet. The first and second sets of magnetic field measurements are then processed to compute at least one of a distance and a direction from the drilling well to the target. The electromagnet may be automatically switched back and forth between the first and second states independently from the acquiring and sorting of the magnetic field measurements.

A method to minimize borehole effects upon a multi-component induction tool within a well and borehole with water-based mud includes measuring parameters of the reservoir with the induction tool to create an array of measured components. The method further includes comparing a measured component from the array of measured components with a corresponding model component from an array of model components for a reservoir model with known parameters and no borehole effects, and determining the parameters for the reservoir based upon the comparison of the measured component and the corresponding model component.
