Methods and systems for determining caving volume estimation for use in drilling operations

Methods and systems for determining caving volume estimations based on logging data and geomechanical models are provided. For example, a system can receive image log data measured during a drilling operation in a wellbore. The system can receive an identification of a breakout in a subterranean formation around the wellbore. The system can determine, using the image log data, a breakout angular width for the breakout. The system can determine a breakout depth for the breakout. The system can determine a caving volume based on the breakout depth and the breakout angular width substantially contemporaneously with the drilling operation. The system can output the caving volume estimation for use in substantially contemporaneously adjusting a drilling parameter for the drilling operation.

SELECTIVELY PREDICTING BREAKDOWN PRESSURES AND FRACTURING SUBTERRANEAN FORMATIONS

Some systems and methods of hydraulic fracturing a formation of a borehole include receiving a length-to-radius ratio of a borehole segment of the borehole and determining when the length-to-radius ratio is less than a threshold. Responsive to determining that the length-to-radius ratio is less than the threshold, some systems and methods include predicting a breakdown pressure associated with a formation surrounding the borehole segment based on a length of the borehole segment. Responsive to determining that the length-to-radius ratio is greater than or equal to the threshold, some systems and methods include determining, a characteristic diffusion time associated with a fluid diffusing into the formation surrounding the borehole segment. Some systems and methods include pumping the fluid into the borehole segment to fracture the formation surrounding the borehole segment at the determined breakdown pressure.

Piercing tool aiming device

A system and for providing a bore sight in a piercing tool. A transmitter emits a magnetic field. The flux lines which emanate along the transmitter axis are substantially straight. A receiver at a remote, target location can detect these flux lines. The receiver and transmitter are oriented such that the substantially straight flux line are along an intended bore path. Then, a piercing tool or other boring tool is oriented along the same path and a bore is created.

PRE-LOADED BEARINGS FOR SENSOR SHELL

Devices, systems, and methods for stabilizing a gyroscopic sensor include bearings supporting a MEMS-type gyroscope located in a shell. The shell rotates around a secondary shaft connected to an extension arm of a primary shaft. A biasing element pre-loads thrust bearings on either side of the shell against the extension arm, which can limit motion of the shell during operation of the sensor, thereby improving measurements made by the sensor.

A SINGLE WIRE GUIDANCE SYSTEM FOR RANGING USING UNBALANCED MAGNETIC FIELDS
20170329035 · 2017-11-16 ·

A system for ranging between a target well and a ranging well using unbalanced magnetic fields. The system comprises a current injection path associated with a target well casing. The current injection path is configured to generate a first magnetic field. A return path is coupled to the current injection path. The return path is configured to generate a second magnetic field such that the first and second magnetic fields are unbalanced with respect to each other. The unbalanced magnetic fields can be measured and used to range with the target well.
