A crash impact attenuator for deployment on a construction vehicle includes an energy-absorbing portion, having a backup frame adapted to join the crash impact attenuator to a vehicle, and a sign holder frame extending upwardly from the backup frame. The sign holder frame is adapted to support a first informational sign. Two upwardly extending support posts extend from one of the backup frame and an energy-absorbing portion frame, for supporting a second informational sign forwardly of the sign holder frame, so that the second informational sign is behind the sign holder frame from an approaching motorist's point of view. The support posts may be raised to a display position, with the second informational sign thus being positioned above the sign holder frame, and may further be lowered to a stowed position, so that the second informational sign is positioned behind the sign holder frame.

A crash impact attenuator is adapted for deployment on a vehicle, and includes a cartridge portion having at least one energy absorbing module, as well as a backup system having a backup frame, which is adapted to attach the cartridge portion to the vehicle. The backup system includes an actuator configured to pivot the cartridge portion between a deployed orientation and a stored orientation about a pivot axis disposed on a lower half of the backup system. The backup system further includes a lockout frame member having a contact surface on one end thereof, the lockout frame member being actuatable between a deployed orientation wherein the contact surface engages a portion of the backup frame to support the backup frame against vehicular impact forces and a stowed orientation wherein the contact surface is not engaged with the backup frame.

IMPACT NOSE WEDGE

An anchorless crash cushion apparatus comprises a number of crash cushion elements and a nose assembly. The crash cushion elements are configured to be directly or indirectly connected end-to-end. The nose assembly is configured to be connected to one of the crash cushion elements and includes a forward component and a rearward component. The forward component includes a vertical section configured to engage the vehicle and a wedge incline extending diagonally upward toward the vertical section. The rearward component is configured to be driven upward by the wedge incline when the forward component is driven toward the rearward component by the vehicle.

A crash cushion includes a pair of laterally spaced and longitudinally extending rails. A diaphragm frame is moveably supported by the rails. An outer guide is coupled to the diaphragm frame and is configured to engage an outboard portion of the rail on the impact side respectively during a lateral impact. The outer guide on the impact side is releasable from the outboard portion of the rail. A pair of laterally spaced inner guides are coupled to the diaphragm frame and successively engage and release the inboard portion of the impact side and non-impact side of the rails during an impact of sufficient severity. A flexible panel may be coupled to the impact side of the diaphragm frame. A deformable energy absorbing member is moveably connected to a stationary backup.

Hinge plate with wedge

An anchorless crash cushion apparatus comprises a number of crash cushion elements and a number of hinge plate assemblies. The crash cushion elements are configured to be connected end-to-end. Each hinge plate assembly comprises a forward structure, a rearward structure, and a wedge incline. The forward structure supports the front end of one of the crash cushion elements. The rearward structure supports the rear end of the crash cushion element. The wedge incline extends diagonally upward toward the forward structure and is configured to drive a subsequent one of the crash cushion elements upward when the forward structure is driven toward the subsequent one of the crash cushion elements.
