A vibration exciter for a soil compacting device includes a first unbalanced shaft on which at least one first unbalanced mass is arranged, a second unbalanced shaft which is arranged axially parallel to the first unbalanced shaft, which is contra-directionally rotatably coupled to the first unbalanced shaft in form-locked manner, and on which at least one second unbalanced mass is arranged, and a drive device for rotatably driving one of the unbalanced shafts and a rotation device. The drive device can be actuated by an actuation device in order to rotate the second unbalanced mass relative to the first unbalanced mass. The second unbalanced shaft has a cavity, and the actuation device is at least partially arranged inside the cavity.

The second weight is clutchable between an idle mode when driven in the direction, and a rotatable mode when driven in the direction. The second weight is arranged to idle with respect to the shaft in the idle mode. The shaft is arranged to cause the first amplitude of the vibration by the first weight in the idle mode, and the second weight is arranged to rotate synchronously with the shaft in the rotatable mode to cause the second amplitude of the vibration.

The rotor (10) is arranged to be actuated by at least one magnetic field to rotation around the shaft (3) and the winding unit (9) is arranged to generate the magnetic fields which actuates the rotor (10) to rotation.

The oscillation mass units of different oscillatory arrangements can be offset from each other in the direction of the roll rotation axis.
