Shape-morphing space frame apparatus using linear bistable elements
09783978 · 2017-10-10 · ·

A shape-morphing space frame (SMSF) utilizing the linear bistable compliant crank-slider mechanism (LBCCSM). The frame's initial shape is constructed from a single-layer grid of flexures, rigid links and LBCCSMs. The grid is bent into the space frame's initial cylindrical shape, which can morph because of the inclusion of LBCCSMs in its structure. The design parameters include the frame's initial height, its tessellation pattern (including the unit cell bistable elements' placement), its initial diameter, and the resulting desired shape. The method used in placing the unit cell bistable elements considers the principle stress trajectories. Two different examples of shape-morphing space frames are presented herein, each starting from a cylindrical-shell space frame and morphing, one to a hyperbolic-shell space frame and the other to a spherical-shell space frame, both morphing by applying moments, which shear the cylindrical shell, and forces, which change the cylinder's radius using Poisson's effect.

Pergola provided with extensible roof surface

A pergola comprising a base module having a quadrangular support structure provided with vertical uprights connected to each other by at least one pair of rails and at least one transverse crossbeam connecting the pair of rails. The base module delimits a first roof surface. The pergola includes an extension module having a framework provided with at least one pair of struts. Each strut is at least partially vertically superposed on a corresponding rail, and is provided with at least one support leg that supports the overhanging framework on the side opposite the base module in the longitudinal direction. The extension module delimits a second roof surface at least partially superposed on the first. A guide structure is interposed between the struts and the rails for guiding a reciprocal longitudinal translation between the base module and the extension module, to modify the overall roof surface of the pergola.

A structural frame for a building includes a plurality of columns, beams, and beam-to-column connections. A plurality of braces are positioned in frame bays formed by respective pairs of columns and beams, each brace comprising a multi-piece brace having a plurality of brace portions. A plurality of discontinuous elastic zone connections couple the plurality of beams to the plurality of columns via the plurality of beam-to-column connections and/or couple pieces of the multi-piece brace together. Each of the discontinuous elastic zone connections comprises connection mechanisms and a compression element positioned on each connection mechanism, with each compression element comprising a single component or a plurality of deformable components in a parallel stack, a series stack, or a combination of parallel stacks and series stacks. The compression element is configured to provide elasticity in the structural frame and dampen the effects of transient loads on the structural frame.
