Antimicrobial hydrocolloid dressing containing sequestered peroxide and preparation thereof
This disclosure provides a method of preparing a hydrocolloid adhesive that includes the steps of mixing one or more components to produce a continuous phase, heating the continuous phased to a predetermined temperature between about 135° C. to 170° C., adding a stabilizer to the continuous phase, reducing a temperature of the continuous phase to a second predetermined temperature below 99° C., adding a discontinuous phase to the continuous phase at the second predetermined temperature, and mixing the components of the discontinuous phase and the continuous phase to produce a uniform mixture. Further, the hydrocolloid adhesive includes a super absorbent material and 0.05% to 2% by weight of a peroxide.
Magnetically immobilized biocidal enzymes and biocidal chemicals
The present invention provides compositions and methods for reducing bacterial contamination or infection in plants, animals, fabrics, and products therefrom. The present invention also provides compositions and methods for reducing human infections and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. In particular, the invention provides magnetic nanoparticles comprising bactericidal or bacteriostatic enzymes in one component, substrates for the enzymes in a second component, and a bactericidal chemical agent that works in combination or synergistically with the enzymes. The compositions are dormant and become active upon exposure to hydration, oxygen, or mixing.
OXYGEN-RELEASING BIOMATERIALS, ARTICLES AND METHODS
An oxygen-releasing biomaterial, articles and methods, and more particularly an oxygen-releasing biomaterial with sustained oxygen-releasing properties of four to five weeks, which is suitable for tissue engineering scaffolds, is disclosed. The biomaterial contains a hydrogel with a plurality of microparticles suspended in the hydrogel. The microparticles contain an oxygen carrier that is encapsulated in a biocompatible hydrophobic material, where the release of oxygen from the oxygen carrier is sustained over a four to five week period. The biomaterial has application in tissue engineering, osteogenesis, burn and wound treatment, and treatment of cardiac conditions, and has further antimicrobial properties.
TISSUE SCAFFOLD
Tissue scaffold matrices, and methods of their use, are described. The matrices comprise an enzyme that is able to convert a substrate to release hydrogen peroxide and a substrate for the enzyme. The matrices may be impregnated with cells, such as stem cells. Also described are cell cultures, and methods for proliferating and/or differentiating cells.
Method for treating tissue
Methods for treating tissue are provided. In one embodiment, an adjunct material, when secured to tissue, can receive at least one physiological element released from the tissue during healing progression of the tissue, and can exhibit first and second stiffnesses in compression that are approximately constant during first and second time periods from contact with the tissue, with the second stiffness decreasing with time as a function of at least one of oxidation, enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis, and change of pH resulting from interaction with the at least one physiological element. In another embodiment, the adjunct can receive a unit volume of fluid that causes first and second portions of the adjunct to expand according to first and second expansion behaviors that differ from one another to apply different pressures to the tissue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS FOR DEODERIZATION OF MAMMALIAN URINE
Disclosed are compositions, materials, garments, devices, and methods for controlling or neutralizing offensive odors associated with mammalian urine. For example, disclosed are personal care products (e.g., diapers), deodorizing colloidal compositions, urine-based fertilizers, portable urination systems, and methods of their use. Such deodorizing colloidal compositions, urine-based fertilizers, portable urination systems are characterized in that they contain an acrylate polymer comprising at least one acrylic acid monomer or salt thereof, which imparts a odor-neutralizing effect. Also provided are methods of recovering water from the systems disclosed herein.
Methods of producing an osteoinductive calcium phosphate material for bone grafting
The present invention relates to methods for producing biphasic calcium phosphate materials using chemical processing methods including exposure to peroxides. The resulting materials exhibit an osteoinductive needle-like surface morphology and are useful as artificial bone grafts.
ANTIMICROBIAL SUPERABSORBENT COMPOSITIONS
A composition has an enzyme that is able to convert a substrate to release hydrogen peroxide; a substrate for the enzyme; and a superabsorbent component, such as a superabsorbent polymer. The composition is in the form of a powder and may form a gel on contact with water.
MICROENVIRONMENTAL GAS PERMEABLE LAYER CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING HYDROGEN
A gas permeable layer capable of supplying hydrogen includes a thin layer, encapsulating a hydrogen production formula. An outer side of the thin layer is airtight. An inner side is air-permeable. An inner side surface has a plurality of small holes. The thin layer can be a single layer or a composite layer. The hydrogen production formula does not dissipate. The hydrogen production formula absorbs moisture in the air or liquid water, thereby generating hydrogen. The hydrogen is released onto the skin and into the human body through the small holes. The hydrogen production formula includes metal peroxides, metal hydroxides, or metal hydrides and aluminum powder, or microsilica. The gas permeable layer can be used in sanitary products including eye masks, mouth masks, face masks, cosmetic facial masks, bras, pasties, nursing pads, sanitary napkins (towels), diapers, panty liners, wound dressing, woundplasts, bandage gauze, decubitus pads.
ANTIMICROBIAL COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR THEIR PRODUCTION
This invention relates to a method for preparing compositions for preventing or treating microbial infections, compositions suitable for use in such treatments and methods for treatment or prevention of infections. One such composition finds particular use in treating mastitis in ruminants. The composition is administered into the udder of an animal as a highly effective treatment for mastitis, or as a prophylactic therapy, by means of an intra-mammary infusion. The milk produced by the animal, during treatment using the composition and method of the invention, is free of residues, such as antibiotics, antimicrobial agents or antimicrobial proteins, which could affect its suitability for drinking or in the production of milk products, such as cheese or yoghurt. The compositions and methods are also useful in treating and preventing lung infections; and infections in burns and wounds; and other infections caused by biofilms. The compositions may also be used on medical devices to prevent infection.
