PROMOTED MEMBRANE FOR SINGLE-PLY ROOFING
A promoted membrane suitable for use in single-ply roofing applications is disclosed. The membrane comprises EPDM rubber and 0.1 to 10 wt. % of an adhesion promoter. The promoter comprises a polyester resin having a hydroxyl number within the range of 28 to 250 mg KOH/g, a content of terephthalate recurring units within the range of 40 to 65 wt. % based on the amount of polyester resin, and a glass-transition temperature within the range of 40 C. to 80 C. Roofing systems comprising the promoted EPDM membranes are also disclosed. Compared with an unpromoted membrane, the promoted membranes provide a substantial and unexpected boost in peel strength such that the roofing systems resist weather-induced failure of the bond between the roofing membrane and the roof substrate. The invention helps roofers minimize or limit the aggravation and cost of warranty claims from customers whose buildings and contents may otherwise be damaged or destroyed by exposure to wind and/or rain.
ROOFING SYSTEMS UTILIZING A PRIMER INCLUDING A SILICON-TERMINATED POLYMER
A method of installing a roof system, the method comprising (i) providing a first membrane panel including a polymeric planar body having a top planar surface and a bottom planar surface; (ii) securing the first membrane panel to a roof substrate; (iii) providing a second membrane panel including a polymeric planar body having a top planar surface and a bottom planar surface; (iv) positioning the second membrane panel adjacent to the first membrane panel so that the second membrane panel overlaps the first membrane panel in a lap region; (v) applying a primer composition to the top planar surface of the first membrane panel in the lap region to form a first primed surface; (vi) optionally applying a primer composition to the bottom planar surface of the second membrane panel in the lap region to form a second primed surface; (vii) applying an adhesive to at least one of the first primed surface or the second primed surface; and (viii) seaming the first membrane panel to the second membrane panel with the adhesive, where the primer composition applied to the first membrane panel and the primer composition optionally applied to the second membrane panel includes a silyl-terminated polymer.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR APPLYING DOTS OF DIFFERENT ADHESIVES TO MOVING ROOFING SHINGLE STOCK
Systems and methods of applying self-seal strips of multiple different adhesives are disclosed. In one embodiment, two spaced apart spoked applicator wheel assemblies are positioned beneath a web of moving shingle stock such that each of the applicator wheels applies dots of different adhesives in an alternating pattern. In other embodiments, a layer of a second adhesive is deposited onto previously applied dots of a first adhesive to form layered adhesive dots with dual properties of both adhesives.

Some embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a roofing system. In some embodiments, the roofing system includes a first roofing material, wherein the first roofing material comprises a top surface and a bottom surface. In some embodiments, the top surface of the first roofing material comprises a nail zone with a plurality of fines. In some embodiments, the roofing system includes a second roofing material, wherein the second roofing material comprises a top surface and a bottom surface. In some embodiments, the bottom surface of the second roofing material comprises a plurality of fines. In some embodiments, the roofing system comprises and a patterned adhesive, which directly contacts at least a portion of the plurality of fines in the nail zone and at least a portion of the plurality of fines on the bottom surface of the second roofing material.

Bituminous tile with sealing engagement devices delimiting positioning areas of the anchoring nails including a tile body of the layered type and provided with shaped flaps delimited by separation cuts, wherein the upper face of the tile body is provided with a plurality of sealing engagement devices which are made in such a way as to have an immediately identifiable nailing area which is perimetrically delimited by a sealing engagement area that is made of an adhesive and/or thermally adhesive and/or hot melt material. The sealing engagement area enables the bonding engagement of the corresponding flap of the bituminous tile that in a laid condition is thereby overlapped, also enables a perfect sealing of the insertion area of the anchoring nail.
High speed sealant strip application
An applicator is disclosed for applying sealant to a moving substrate. The applicator includes a wheel having a periphery. A plurality of spaced apart footprints extends around the periphery of the wheel and each footprint has a sealant receiving feature. A reservoir is provided for containing a supply of sealant to be applied to the moving substrate. The wheel is rotatably mounted at least partially in the reservoir such that as the wheel rotates, each of the spaced apart footprints repeatedly moves through a supply of sealant in the reservoir to pick up a charge of sealant, around one side of the wheel toward the moving substrate, adjacent the moving substrate to transfer the sealant charge to the substrate, and around the other side of the wheel back toward the supply of sealant. At least one stop is formed on each of the footprints for inhibiting sealant picked up by the footprint from being urged rearwardly on the footprint by high speed rotation of the wheel. A backstop may be formed at a trailing end of each footprint and mid-stops may be formed between a leading end of each footprint and the trailing end.
Adhering single ply membrane to a roof deck with a hot melt or pressure sensitive adhesive applied to a release liner or transfer film
A method for applying a roofing membrane may include unrolling an adhesive material onto a roofing board to adhere a bottom surface of the adhesive material to the roofing board. The method may include removing a release liner from the adhesive material to expose a top surface of the adhesive material. The method may include applying a roofing membrane to the exposed top surface of the adhesive material to adhere the roofing membrane to the roofing board.
ROOFING SHINGLES WITH REGISTERED SELF-SEAL STRIP PATTERNS
Shingles have self-seal strips with features that include sealant dashes or dots separated by drainage gaps. The self-seal strips are registered with each shingle so that the features are positioned at the same locations on each shingle. A method of making such shingles includes synchronizing the rotation of sealant applicator wheels with the shingle chop cutter so that cuts are made at repeated designated locations along the applied self-seal strips.
Roofing materials with improved low temperature sealant performance and methods of making thereof
This invention, in embodiments, relates to a roofing material comprising (a) a coated or covered substrate and (b) a single sealant applied to a surface of the coated or covered substrate, with the single sealant being free of asphalt. The single sealant exhibits a minimum activation temperature (? C.) (tan ?>1) from ?10? C. to 0? C. The single sealant is configured to adhere the roofing material to at least one of (i) an underlying roofing material, (ii) an overlying roofing material, and (iii) a roofing deck substrate.
Reroofing shingle
An exemplary roofing system for covering an existing shingle roof with an exposure height measured between bottom edges of adjacent courses is disclosed. The roofing shingle system comprising includes a plurality of reroofing shingles. The reroofing shingles have an exposure portion extending from a top edge to a bottom edge for a height that is at least the exposure height of the existing shingle roof. At least one course of reroofing shingles is installed on at least one course of the existing shingle roof, wherein the course of the existing roof is covered by the at least one course of reroofing shingles. The top edge of the reroofing shingles abuts the bottom edge of the adjacent course of existing shingles.
