MICRONIZED EGGSHELL MEMBRANE PARTICLES AND THE USE THEREOF TO PROMOTE THE HEALING OF WOUNDS
20170319629 · 2017-11-09 ·

The invention provides a particle consisting essentially of micronized ESM and having a mean particle diameter of less than 100 μm for use in promoting the healing of a chronic wound at risk of, or in which there is, (i) an inappropriate level of matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP) activity against extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and/or peptide growth or differentiation factors, and/or (ii) an excessive inflammatory response. The invention further provides pharmaceutical compositions, wound dressings and implantable medical devices comprising the micronized ESM-containing particles for use in said treatments. The invention still further provides methods for manufacturing the micronized ESM-containing particles and the compositions, dressings and implantable medical devices comprising the same.

Multiphase Gel
20170319751 · 2017-11-09 ·

Disclosed are hydrogels polymerized with or around a solid biofunctional moiety, biodegradable or permanent, designed to be implantable in a mammalian body, intended to block or mitigate the formation of tissue adhesions, and intended to aid in functional healing. The hydrogels of the present invention are characterized by comprising multiphasic structural elements: a) at least one gel phase, b) at least one solid phase, c) optional polymeric chains connecting gel and solid phases, d) optional shape designs that provide for an interpenetrating geometry between gels and solids, e) optional shape designs that enhance a tissue-hydrogel interface, and f) optional shape designs that provide a biofunctional aspect. The hydrophobicity of the various phases is chosen to reduce tissue adhesion and enhance tissue healing. The morphology of the polymers comprising the gel phase is typically of high molecular weight and has morphology that encourages entanglement. Useful polymeric structures include branching chains, comb or brush, and dendritic morphologies.

Silicone Membrane Slitting Machine and Method
20170259449 · 2017-09-14 ·

A mechanism and a method for slitting silicone membranes using automated slitting blades is presented. The pattern of slits in the membrane can be adjusted by using a cutting cylinder comprised of a plurality of circular cutting gears assembled in parallel.

The cutting cylinder is of indefinite length, but in the preferred embodiment is approximately 15″ long and 3″ in diameter. The silicone membrane can range in thickness from 0.005″ to 0.01″ inch.

METHODS OF PREVENTATIVE THERAPY FOR POST-TRAUMATIC OSTEOARTHRITIS

In certain embodiments, the present invention provides a method for preventing or treating post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a subject in need thereof, comprising administrating a pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective amount of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes or mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomal microRNA to the subject. In certain embodiments, the present invention provides a method for preventing progressive fibrocartilage degeneration in a subject in need thereof, comprising administrating a pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective amount of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes or mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomal microRNA to the subject.

Self-lubricating tampon applicator
RE048838 · 2021-12-07 ·

A self-lubricating tampon applicator includes a barrel having opposed insertion and proximal end portions and having a continuous side wall that defines an interior area and a plurality of spaced apart apertures and proximate the insertion end portion. A tampon is positioned in the interior area of the barrel. A piercing member is positioned between the tampon and the plurality of apertures. A lubricant reservoir is positioned between the tampon and the plurality of piercing members. A plunger situated in the barrel engages a proximal end of the tampon and is slidable from a starter configuration extending from the proximal end portion of the barrel to a deployed configuration positioned inside the barrel. Pressure applied to the plunger pushes the tampon and the reservoir downstream and the reservoir is pierced by the piercing member, dispensing lubricant through the plurality of apertures onto an outer surface of the barrel.

Particle delivery via small-scale morphology materials for antibacterial applications

Disclosed herein is a particle delivery system comprising electrospun nanofiber comprised of coaxial fiber with a microfluidic core. Iron-doped apatite nanoparticles (IDANPs) have demonstrated a unique influence over phage killing of bacteria, whereby, IDANP-exposed bacterial cultures experience 2× the bacterial death as controls. IDANPs consist of hydroxyapatite (HA) doped with iron. HA is a mineral known to be biocompatible and analogous to the inorganic constituent of mammalian bone and teeth and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for many applications in medicine and dentistry. Previous work has shown that for IDANPs to enhance antibacterial activity of phage to the greatest extent, bacterial cultures should be exposed to IDANPs for 1 hr prior to phage introduction. Biocompatible polymer materials which encase IDANPs and/or phage can be used to disseminate IDANPs and/or phage in a controlled manner into a physiological system for treatment of bacterial infection. When components of said materials contain micro- or nano-scale components, high surface-to-volume ratio for treatment delivery is garnered.
