System and method of damping vibrations of tower structures
11459783 · 2022-10-04 · ·

A system for damping vibration of a tower structure at a selected one or more natural frequencies of the tower structure. The system includes a tank assembly with one or more tanks, and a fluid positioned in the tank to a preselected depth above a floor. The tank includes wall(s) defining an average travelling distance of a wave through the fluid initiated by the vibration of the tower structure at the natural frequency. The system includes one or more inserts located on the floor in the tank for damping movement of the fluid. The preselected depth and the average travelling distance are selected so that the fluid is movable at the selected natural frequency and out of phase with the vibration of the tower structure, to dampen the vibration of the tower structure at the selected natural frequency.

NITINOL BELLEVILLE ELASTIC NONLINEAR (NI-BELLE-E-N) STRUCTURAL ASSEMBLY
20220290458 · 2022-09-15 ·

A structural assembly and a structural bracing system including the structural assembly are presented. The structural assembly includes Belleville disks and shape memory alloy (SMA) rods with nonlinear elastic behavior (e.g., Nitinol rods) to resist lateral force. Stacked Belleville disks are placed between plates resulting in nonlinear elastic behavior in compression. Shape memory alloy rods are placed at the corners of the plates and held by nuts at the exterior faces of the plates. The rods are loose when a compression load is applied to the plates and will work in tension when a tensile load is applied to the plates. A shaft (e.g., steel tube) is placed at the center of the Belleville disks to stabilize the assembly. Addition of the assembly with nonlinear elastic behavior in both tension and compression loadings to a structural bracing system improves the structural behavior of the bracing system.

Friction damper for a building structure

A friction damper for attenuating vibrations of a structure. The friction damper includes a first connecting member configured to be attached to a first member of the structure, a second connecting member configured to be attached to a second member of the structure, a first slotted-bar interconnected between the first connecting member and the second connecting member, and a second slotted-bar interconnected between the first connecting member and the second connecting member. The first slotted-bar and the second-slotted bar are configured to allow horizontal and vertical movements of the first connecting member and the second connecting member relative to each other responsive to vibration of the structure.

A system to protect tall building from earthquake giving a garbage treatment plant as bonus with the said system comprising of an large inertial mass formed of unconsolidated matter being one of biomass and one of garbage and with the inertial mass being connected to the protected tall building, the inertial mass is held by main retaining structure and absorbs and damps earthquake waves and reduces stress on the structural frame of the adjoining building. The resulting garbage storage and treatment not only solves the garbage problem of a city but also yields useful by products namely biogas and compost with the garbage being treated by aerobic and anaerobic processes along with use of micro organisms that tolerate high pressures. This is a method of building smart cities in a sustainable manner by the smart use of material being waste material or otherwise in a cost effective manner.
