The control system (23) is operable to obtain measurement data from at least one energy transfer sensor (40) arranged to sense a transfer of energy between the patient and the connection system (C) or between the patient and the blood circuit (20). The control system (23) is configured to, in the pre-treatment mode, process the measurement data for identification of a characteristic change indicating a connection of the blood circuit (20) to the vascular system of the patient, and, upon such identification, take dedicated action. The action may involve activating at least part of a patient protection system and/or enabling entry into the blood treatment mode. The control system may be included in an apparatus (200) for blood treatment, such as a dialysis machine.

Method for peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments
A dialysis method to enable a patient to undergo both peritoneal dialysis and extracorporeal blood treatments is disclosed. The method includes determining, via a base unit controller, whether a peritoneal dialysis treatment or an extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed. If the peritoneal dialysis treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating first software instructions that cause a base unit to use a first fluid stored in a fluid container. If the extracorporeal blood treatment is to be performed, the method includes operating second software instructions that cause the base unit to use a second, different fluid from an online source and selectively move the second, different fluid to a blood treatment unit for use in the extracorporeal blood treatment. The blood treatment unit is operable with the base unit to perform the extracorporeal blood treatment on a patient.

Intravenous Sensing System
An intravenous sensing system includes an intravenous needle that may be inserted into an artery. Thus, the intravenous needle may receive blood from the artery. The intravenous needle may be fluidly coupled to a dialysis machine. Thus, the blood may be routed to the dialysis machine. A sensing unit is coupled to the needle. The sensing unit senses blood pressure inside the artery when the intravenous needle is inserted into the artery. The sensing unit is electrically coupled to the dialysis machine. Thus, the dialysis machine may monitor the blood pressure.
Collection of mononuclear cells upon mid-procedure termination
Mid-procedure termination of a mononuclear cell collection procedure may prevent collection of an amount of red blood cells that is required to harvest a complete mononuclear cell product. Blood separation systems and methods are provided for minimizing the impact of or recovering from mid-procedure termination of such a mononuclear cell collection procedure. According to one approach, blood or separated red blood cells are conveyed into a red blood cell collection container relatively early in the procedure to minimize the impact of a later termination of the procedure. According to another approach, blood and/or separated red blood cells within a fluid processing assembly are redirected through the fluid processing assembly following mid-procedure termination to allow for at least partial mononuclear cell collection. According to yet another approach, a double-needle fluid processing assembly may be converted into a single-needle configuration to allow for continued processing following mid-procedure termination.
