Systems and methods for mounting a cutter in a drill bit

Rotary drill bits may include on or more cutting element assemblies which include a cutter and a mounting system. In one embodiment, the mounting system includes a housing, a first bearing component disposed within the housing, and a second bearing component associated with the cutting element. In certain embodiments, the bearing components may comprise a table of superhard material bonded with a substrate. In one or more embodiments, the bearing components may include bearing surfaces that are arcuate. For example, the bearing surfaces may be substantially spherical (a portion of a sphere). The bearing components may be arranged to act as a radial bearing as well as a thrust bearing for the cutting element, enabling the cutting element to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the cutter, relative to the housing, while also enabling the longitudinal axis of the cutter to be displaced (change angles) relative to the housing.

Cutting elements having non-planar surfaces and tools incorporating the same

A cutting element includes a body, a non-planar cutting face formed on a first end of the body, and an edge formed around a perimeter of the cutting face. The cutting face includes a central raised portion, and the edge has an edge angle defined between the cutting face and a side surface of the body. The edge angle varies around the perimeter of the cutting face and includes an acute edge angle defined by a portion of the cutting face extending downwardly from the edge to a depth from the cutting angle. The portion of the edge defining the acute edge angle may be directly adjacent: a side surface of the cutting element; a bevel of the cutting element; or a flat region at the perimeter of the cutting element or bevel.

Drill bit cutter

A cutter for a drill bit to drill a formation. The cutter has a cylindrical substrate, and a cutting table that is superhard material coupled to the substrate. The cutting table along a direction away from the cylindrical substrate increases in width.

Polycrystalline-diamond compact air bit

A PDC drill bit for use in downhole air drilling includes a body with a face for engaging a bottom of a hole being drilled and a gauge for engaging a side of the hole being drilled. The face includes a cone, a nose outward of the cone, a shoulder outward of the nose. The bit further includes channels formed in the face of the bit that extend from within the cone to the gauge. The channels define a plurality of blades separated by the channels. Each of the plurality of blades has a leading edge with PDC cutters mounted thereon. One or more of the channels are defined by two side walls and a bottom wall and has a length, width and depth. The width or depth remains substantially constant from a first point on its length within the cone to a second point within the shoulder.

Earth-boring tools having pockets trailing rotationally leading faces of blades and having cutting elements disposed therein and related methods

An earth-boring tool may include a plurality of blades extending axially and radially from a body. A first plurality of cutting elements may be disposed along rotationally leading faces of the plurality of blades. A pocket may be formed within a blade, and the pocket may extend angularly into the blade from a rotationally leading face of the blade within a shoulder region of the blade. A second plurality of cutting elements may be disposed within the at least one pocket. A ratio of a cutting profile height of the earth-boring tool and a diameter of the earth-boring tool may be within a range of about 0.15 and about 0.25. A rotational pathway of at least one cutting element of the second plurality of cutting elements may at least partially overlaps with another rotational pathway of at least one cutting element of the first plurality of cutting elements.

Drill bits are provided for a drilling while driving machine. In some cases, the drill bit is a multi-stage bit capable of selectively cutting at two different diameters. In others, the bit is an expanding bit that can be passed through a foundation component while its being driven. The bit has a pair of cutting wings that can move between a retracted orientation where the bit's diameter is narrower than the inner diameter of the driven component, to a splayed orientation where the diameter is equal to or larger than the driven component's outside diameter.
