Cable Connectors for Use Downhole

A cable system for use downhole includes a connector assembly having a body and a bore formed therethrough; a conductor disposed through the bore of the connector assembly; and a first insulation layer disposed around the conductor. An insulator tube is disposed around the conductor and has an end attached to the first insulation layer. The insulator tube may be made of a thermoplastic material. A graphite containing sealing member is disposed in the bore and disposed between the insulator tube and the body of the connector assembly.

Real time untorquing and over-torquing of drill string connections

An apparatus for detecting over-torquing or un-torquing of a threaded connection between components in a borehole penetrating the earth includes: a string of components coupled in series by a threaded connection; a transmission line attached to each component; a signal coupler in communication with the transmission line and disposed on each component at each threaded connection, the signal coupler being configured to transmit the signal to an adjacent signal coupler on an adjacent coupled component in order to transmit a signal along the transmission line attached to the adjacent coupled component; a receiver configured to receive the signal; and a processor in communication with the receiver and configured to: (i) determine a difference between a characteristic of the signal and the characteristic of a reference signal and (ii) transmit an alert signal signifying that the threaded connection is over-torquing or un-torquing in response to the difference exceeding a threshold value.

Harness for intelligent completions

A downhole tubing string and an umbilical harness are combined in a wellbore. The umbilical harness, which is formed remote from the wellbore, includes an umbilical, and umbilical connectors connected to lines in the umbilical. Connectors attach to well components and make up part of the downhole tubing string. The well components include valves, sensors, and actuators. The umbilical connectors attach to the umbilical at strategic locations so the umbilical connectors can reach and be mated to corresponding component connectors when the umbilical harness and downhole string are combined. Electricity, communication signals, or both, are transmitted along the lines in the umbilical, which are selectively conveyed to each component via the mated connectors. As the umbilical connectors are installed on the umbilical prior to wellsite delivery, the umbilical harness and downhole string are combined by engaging plugs on respective ends of umbilical connectors and corresponding ends of component connectors.

Side-exit motor cable connections

Systems and methods for connecting power cables to downhole equipment such as ESPs using side-exit (radial) connections. In one embodiment, a system includes an electric drive coupled by a power cable to an ESP. The electric drive is positioned at the surface of a well with the power cable coupled to it. The power cable extends into the well bore and is coupled to the downhole equipment which is positioned in the well bore. The power cable has a connector with a first set of radially oriented terminals (the terminals are perpendicular to the conductors of the power cable). These terminals engage a second set of terminals that are installed in the downhole equipment. The radial orientation of the terminals of the connector and downhole equipment allow the power cable to remain axially oriented, thereby facilitating engagement of the terminals and requiring less annular space in the well bore.

Completion Deflector For Intelligent Completion Of Well
20170234113 · 2017-08-17 ·

A completion system and method for intelligent control of multilateral wells. A completion deflector defines a hollow interior that is fluidly coupled with a uphole tubing and downhole main completion strings. Hydraulic, electric, and/or fiber-optic communication line segments extend between the uphole end and downhole end of the completion deflector for providing power, control or communications between the surface and production zones associated with the main wellbore. The communication line segments are located outside the completion deflector interior and may be located within longitudinal grooves formed along the exterior wall surface of the completion deflector. A self-guided, wet-matable connector is provided at the uphole end, which connects the both interior flow path and communication lines, and which may allow connection at any relative radial orientation. The uphole end of the completion deflector has an inclined upper surface for deflecting various tools and strings into a lateral wellbore.
