Crash impact attenuator systems and methods

A crash impact attenuator system for deployment in front of a structure includes a rail and a plurality of diaphragms initially disposed in spaced relation along the length of the rail. Each of the plurality of diaphragms moves along the rail, so that when a front end of the crash attenuator system receives an impact force from a vehicle, a first one of the diaphragms moves rearwardly along the rail and impacts a second one of the diaphragms so that both the first and second diaphragms move further rearwardly along the rail, this process continuing with additional ones of the diaphragms until the impact forces have been fully attenuated. A tearing member on the crash attenuator system engages material forming a side or fender panel of the crash attenuator system, the tearing member tearing material forming the side panel to attenuate the impact force.

BARRIER SYSTEM

Described herein is a longitudinal beam barrier system that comprises a longitudinal beam and a post linked together via a fastener incorporating at least one deformable washer. The link is made in a releasable and tunable manner dependent on an applied force via the at least one deformable washer. Release may be made dependent on both the magnitude and direction of the force so that release may be a result of different release forces in different force angles. The deformable washer may be designed to transfer a longitudinal beam load force from a fastener to a post wall, the washer extending around the fastener and having a first face that bears on the fastener or a part thereof (or forms part of the fastener) and an opposing face that at least partly bears on a part of the post wall or walls. The washer is designed so that, in the event of an impact of sufficient force on the longitudinal beam, post, or fastener, the washer at least partly deforms allowing separation to occur between the post or posts and the longitudinal beam.

System for illuminating a carriageway in a case of fog

A system for illuminating a carriageway in a case of fog includes a road safety barrier arranged along the carriageway, at least one fog density detecting device arranged along the road safety barrier, and a plurality of light sources borne by the road safety barrier, distributed along the road safety barrier, and oriented for each to emit a light beam having a direction that is transversal to an extension axis of the road safety barrier so as to illuminate signage on the carriageway. A control unit that is connected to the light sources and to the fog density detecting device is configured to activate the light sources when the fog density detecting device detects a fog density value of above a threshold value.

APPARATUS FOR ABSORBING ENERGY RESULTING FROM VEHICLE IMPACT

Apparatus positioned at a guardrail lead end portion for absorbing energy resulting from vehicle impact includes an impact terminal, a support structure supporting the impact terminal at or adjacent to a lead end portion of the guardrail and a chute. The guardrail is in frictional engagement with inner chute surfaces and the chute applies torquing forces on the guardrail during passage of the guardrail through the chute to cause twisting of the guardrail and absorb vehicle collision impact energy.

ENERGY ABSORPTION ASSEMBLY

Assembly for energy absorption, comprising m number of substantially straight steel wires and n number of curved steel cords, at least one of the m number of substantially straight steel wires having a tensile strength of at least 1000 MPa and an elongation at fracture of at least 5%, at least one of the n number of curved steel cords having a tensile strength of at least 2000 MPa and an elongation at fracture of at least 2%, wherein m and n are integers m>1, n>1, and at least one of the m number of substantially straight steel wires and at least one of the n number of curved steel cords are fixed together along their longitudinal direction, and the elongation at fracture of at least one of the m number of substantially straight steel wires is at least 2% larger than the elongation at fracture of at least one of the n number of curved steel cords such that the elongation curve of the assembly comprises three zones (11, 11, 12, 12, 13, 13), wherein a first zone (11,11) is characterized by an elastic deformation of the substantially straight steel wires, a second zone (12,12) is characterized by the plastic deformation of the substantially straight steel wires and a third zone (13,13) is composed of the continued plastic deformation of the substantially straight steel wires and the elastic deformation of the curved steel cords.
