Thermally broken framing system and method of use

A thermally broken framing system and method of use are disclosed. The thermal framing system is comprised generally of a structural stud, exterior retention framing and a fastener system comprised of thermal spacer material, and structural fasteners. In one representative embodiment, the structural stud, in cross section is C-shaped, and at one end of the structural stud is a structural tab facing in the direction of the exterior retention framing. The structural tab is further comprised of apertures located at regular intervals. The exterior retention framing is comprised generally of a retention face represented as and two framing tabs attached to the retention face. The framing tabs have framing tab apertures placed at regular intervals from each other to match the spacing of the apertures. The structural tab apertures and framing tab apertures are aligned and thermally insulated fastening units placed through the apertures, securing the apparatus.

A building is constructed from a plurality of rectangular wall sections secured to one another. At least some wall sections are formed of an upper and a lower beam, vertical studs extending between the upper and lower beams and a wall panel secured to the beams and to the studs. In the invention, each beam is formed of an elongate metal sheet folded through a right angle about at least one longitudinally extending line to define at least a horizontal first plate, and a vertical second. A plurality of separately formed sheet metal brackets are secured to at least one of the plates of the folded metal sheet at preset distances from one another along the length of the beam and secured to the ends of the studs.

The second end region of the first elongate portion is connected to the first end region of the second elongate portion so that the composite structural member provided thereby is substantially longer than either of the first and second elongate portions. The first elongate portion may comprise a first member suited for resisting high magnitude forces and the second elongate portion may be a second member, less well suited for resisting high forces but having lower cost per unit length. The composite structural member may be a rafter, especially a rafter of a portal frame.

A tubular beam with mechanically fastened end plates preferably includes a tubular member and at least one end plate. At least one cross plate may be secured within the tubular member with fasteners to strengthen thereof. The tubular member may have any suitable cross section including, square, rectangular, hexagonal, triangular or the like. A plurality of hand access openings, a plurality of beam fastening holes and a plurality of fastener holes are formed through a side wall of the tubular member. The end plate is attached to an end of the tubular beam with a plurality of fasteners. A fastener gusset may be formed in inside corners of the tubular member to accommodate a blind fastener hole for attaching the at least one end plate. Each end plate preferably includes a hand access opening, a plurality of plate fastening holes, and a plurality of blind fastener holes and/or fastener holes.

A method of manufacturing a metal stud from a sheet of cold rolled steel includes the steps of: forming a central spine along a longitudinal centre of the sheet; forcing material outwardly from the central spine to form a thin central zone having a reduced thickness; forming embossments in at least the thin central zone; and forming the sheet into a generally C-shaped member. A stud made from a sheet of cold rolled steel includes a web and a pair of flanges. The web has an elongate central spine, a thin central zone and embossments extending outwardly from the elongate central spine. The pair of flanges extend generally orthogonally from the web. A stud system includes at least two studs and a bridging member extending between adjacent studs.
