A packer having a first end and a second end, the first end adapted to slide along the mandrel in response to a sliding of the end ring, and the second end fixedly coupled to the mandrel, so that a sliding of the first end of the packer toward the second end causes the packer element to decrease in length and increase in radius.

High-temperature, high-pressure, fluid-tight seal using a series of annular rings

The invention is directed to a novel and useful fluid-tight, metal-to-metal, annular seal which can be repeatedly cycled in a high temperature, high pressure environment. More specifically, the invention provides a metal-to-metal, annular, seal on a radially expandable sliding sleeve which moves longitudinally from a reduced ID section of a bore to an enlarged section of the bore. The seal is disengaged at the enlarged bore section resulting in rapid fluid flow and pressure equalization which would destroy many traditional elastomer seals.

One or both of the packers may be actuated to expand or retract for opening and closing off a variety of flowpaths between the BHA and the wellbore, in new wellbores, old wellbores, cased wellbores, wellbores with sleeves and in openhole wellbores. Additional components in the BHA, which may also be electrically-actuated or powered, permit perforating, locating of the BHA in the wellbore such as using casing collar locators and microseismic monitoring in real time or in memory mode.

The invention is achieved by that an endcap (13) is arranged to cover an internal piston (11) and minimize the area of the internal piston (11) that is exposed to the surrounding pressure in the well (PW) acting against the fluid pressure (P1) inside the cylinder (5). The invention also relates to a method for activating a packer device (1) to seal against the surface of a surrounding pipe or casing string (4) and the invention further relates to the use of such a packer device (1).

A pressure cylinder module reciprocates in opposite directions within a limited range over the active mandrel component. When fluid is pumped through a tubing string into the straddle packer, a piston of the pressure cylinder module is urged in one direction along an axis of the active mandrel component while a cylinder wall of the pressure cylinder module is urged in an opposite direction along the axis to simultaneously compress spaced-apart packers of the straddle packer to a packer set condition.
