Downhole valve spanning a tool joint and methods of making and using same
A downhole valve is described. The downhole valve has a pilot valve section and a tool section. The pilot valve section has a first tube. The tool section has a second tube slidably coupled to the first tube of the pilot valve section so as to provide fluid communication between the pilot valve section and the tool section. The tool section can be in the form of a signal valve section of a mud pulse telemetry valve, a reamer, a vertical steerable tool, a rotary steerable tool, a by-pass valve, a packer, a whipstock, or stabilizer.
System and Method for Downhole Telemetry
There is provided a dual telemetry measurement while drilling tool string, the tool string comprising a plurality of modules interconnected lengthwise to enable the tool string to be deployed within a drill string, the plurality of modules comprising: a directional module operable to obtain data from at least one sensor; an electromagnetic transmitter module operable to receive a first data input representative of the data obtained by the directional module from the at least one sensor, and operable to send an electromagnetic signal through an earth formation using an electromagnetic signal generated using the first data input; a mud pulse module operable to receive a second data input representative of the data obtained by the directional module from the at least one sensor, and operable to use the second data input to have a series of pulses transmitted through a mud column in the drill string; and at least one battery module for powering the directional module, the electromagnetic transmitter module, and the mud pulse module.
Modular electro-mechanical assembly for downhole device
A motorized release device for a downhole device includes one or more dogs disposed within a guide of the downhole device. The one or more dogs may move radially within the guide relative to a central axis of the motorized release device, such that the one or more dogs may move between an engaged position and a disengaged position. The motorized release device also includes a cam that is rotatable about the central axis, such that the cam may move between a locked position and an unlocked position. The cam may block the one or more dogs from moving to the disengaged position while the cam is in the locked position. The motorized release device may also include an electronics board. The electronics board may attach to a motor that rotates the cam between the locked position and the unlocked position.
Flow control device and method
The flow control device includes a flow path, a compensation chamber and a regulator assembly defining a first surface exposed to the flow path and an opposing second surface which is exposed to the compensation chamber. A drive arrangement is provided for moving the regulator assembly to vary the flow path. Fluid flowing through the flow path establishes a pressure which varies across the first surface of the regulator assembly. The compensation chamber is in pressure communication with a localised region of the first surface which is selected to establish a compensation chamber pressure which acts against the second surface of the regulator assembly to bias the regulator assembly in a desired direction. The first surface of the regulator assembly may define a profile configured to minimise the variation in pressure applied over the first surface by action of fluid flowing through the flow path.
High amplitude pulse generator for down-hole tools
Well systems comprise communicating devices for use in subterranean formations. An example well system comprises a mud valve system having a stator and a rotor to modulate drilling mud flow to provide increased pulse amplitude signals up-hole for improved and faster signaling from down-hole tools while also providing for better detection capability up-hole. The improved signaling technique permits for deeper well applications.
STATORLESS SHEAR VALVE PULSE GENERATOR
An apparatus for generating pressure variances in a fluid flowing in a downhole tool having a longitudinal axis includes a flow section having an outer wall, a flow control member selectively blocking flow in the flow section, and an actuator moving the flow control member between a first position wherein the flow control member at least partially blocks flow in the flow section and a second position wherein the flow control member reduces the at least partial blockage of the flow in the flow section. The actuator may be disposed outside the outer wall of the flow section.
Electronically controlled pressure relief valve system
A pressure relief valve system for a fluid injection system is provided. The pressure relief valve system comprises one or more pressure transducers configured to sense fluid pressure within the fluid injection system. The transducers then generate electrical signals representative of fluid pressure readings within the fluid injection system in real time. Signals are received by a controller which compares pressure readings with a stored pressure threshold. An actuation signal is sent upon detecting a signal representative of a pressure that exceeds the stored pressure threshold, causing an electraulically-actuated valve to rotatably move to an open position. A method for providing pressure relief for a fluid injection system is also provided.
Devices and methods for filtering pump interference in mud pulse telemetry
Systems and methods for filtering pump interference in mud pulse telemetry are provided. A method includes receiving a monitor output, selecting an adaptive factor in an adaptive filter module, and adjusting the adaptive factor when the adaptive filter module has reached convergence. The method may further include receiving a sensor input, providing a filtered signal output, and modifying a drill configuration based on the signal output. A system configured to perform the method above is provided. A method as above further including modifying a drill configuration based on the signal output is provided.
Downhole linear solenoid actuator system
An example apparatus may include a solenoid actuator with a solenoid coil and a corresponding solenoid armature. A plurality of switches may be coupled to the solenoid coil. A controller may be electrically coupled to the plurality of switches, the controller having a processor and a memory device coupled to the processor. The memory device may contain a set of instructions that, when executed by the processor cause the processor to receive a feedback signal corresponding to a condition of at least one of the solenoid coil and the solenoid armature; and generate a control signal to alter the state of at least one of the plurality of switches based, at least in part, on the received feedback signal.
System and method for data transmission via acoustic channels
The present invention relates to transmitting data using vector sensors and via the vector components of the acoustic field. The data can be received via vector sensors and/or scalar sensors and/or arrays of such sensors.
