A device that can be placed within or near the cranial vault that fluctuates in size in response to changes in CSF pressure is disclosed. The device diminishes in size when CSF pressures rise and increases in size as CSF pressures diminish. The device has the effect of reducing the flow of CSF occurring in the foramen magnum and provides an alternative to craniovertebral decompression in Chiari I patients. The device may have applications in other neurologic illnesses associated with abnormal CSF flow, such as Idiopathic Syringomyelia, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, and CSF dural leaks.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR A HYDROPHILIC CATHETER INTRODUCTION SYSTEM

Various embodiments of a hydrophilic catheter introduction system for improved insertion of a shunt catheter are disclosed herein. The catheter introduction system includes an introducer sheath defining an inner surface that includes a hydrophilic coating to aid in passage of a catheter through the introducer sheath. Evaluation of the catheter introduction system with respect to other catheter introduction systems resulted in a significant decrease in average catheter threading time.

Intercostal pump

An intercostal-pump based fluid management system, as described herein, comprises an intercostal pump that is, generally, a resiliently flexible bulb having an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is attached to a first tube that extends from the intercostal pump to a first area of a patient's body, for example, the patient's pleural cavity. The outlet is connected to a second tube that extends from the intercostal pump to a second area of a patient's body, for example, the patient's peritoneal cavity. In use, the intercostal pump is placed between a first rib and a second rib in a patient. The intercostal pump operates by being successively compressed and decompressed between the first and second ribs as the patient breaths.

MEDICAL DEVICE HAVING NON-FILTERED CSF WITHDRAWAL PATHWAY
20220016403 · 2022-01-20 ·

An implantable medical device for delivering therapeutic fluid to, and withdrawing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from, a CSF-containing space, includes a first inlet configured to be accessed by a needle of an aspiration device; a first outlet; a first fluid pathway extending from the first inlet to the first outlet; a second inlet; a second outlet; and a second fluid pathway extending from the second inlet to the second outlet. The first fluid pathway is free of a filter configured to prevent passage of a microbe.

FLUID CATHETER DEVICE FOR RECORDING BRAIN STATE
20220016404 · 2022-01-20 ·

A device or system for delivering fluid to or removing fluid from a CSF-containing space of a brain and for recording electrical activity from white or grey matter in the brain includes a catheter including a proximal end, a distal end portion, a first lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end portion, and one or more electrodes positioned relative to the catheter a distance from a distal end of the catheter, such that the one or more electrodes would be placed in contact with white or grey matter of the brain if the distal end of the catheter were positioned in the CSF-containing space. The catheter may include the electrodes or a lead adjacent the catheter may include the electrodes.

Implantable Shunt System and Method

The present invention provides a novel shunt device and methods of use, and in particular a cerebral shunt device. The cerebral shunt device includes an outer tube member forming a first lumen, the outer tube member having a drainage outlet and at least one opening to the first lumen in a distal region along the length of the outer tube member. The shunt also includes an inner tube member forming a second lumen, the inner tube member having at least one opening to the second lumen along the length of the inner tube member. The inner tube member is positioned within the first lumen and a pump unit fluidly connected to the second lumen to force fluid from the first lumen, which clears obstructions in the shunt.
