Apparatus used for the humidification of gases in medical procedures

This invention relates to apparatus used to alter the temperature and humidity of gases. The apparatus of the present invention comprises an insufflator, humidifier and transportation means connected to delivery means to deliver humidified and heated gases to a body cavity prior to and during a medical procedure. In one form of the present invention the insufflator and humidifier are contained in the one housing, while in another form the humidifier is located proximal and external to the insufflator. The transportation means that delivers the humidified gases to the body cavity comprises a flexible tubing having located within, throughout or around it heating means. The heating means may be a heat conductive wire, a ribbon of PTC material, or a conducting wire extruded into the walls of tubing, where the tubing may be made from a PTC material or flexible plastics.

The present embodiments provide systems and methods suitable for delivering a therapeutic agent to a target site. In one example, the system comprises a container for holding the therapeutic agent, and a pressure source having pressurized fluid, wherein the pressure source is in selective fluid communication with at least a portion of the container. A catheter is placed in fluid communication with the container, and has a lumen sized for delivery of the therapeutic agent to a target site. A housing is configured to securely retain the container. The system further comprises a camera having a camera head coupled to the catheter, wherein the camera provides a visual image of the target site during delivery of the therapeutic agent.

A blood gas management device comprises a blood passage having a gas-blood interface with a plurality of gas passages, and is arranged to direct a flow of supply gas from the gas inlets through the gas passages to the gas outlets, and to allow a flow of blood in a blood flow path through the blood passage to thereby permit an exchange of blood gas with the supply gas via the interface. The blood gas management device comprises a supply gas distribution arrangement allowing the supply gas to be provided from different directions relative to the blood flow path. This provides an improved gas-transfer gradient at different locations along the gas passage.

Devices and methods for delivering and filtering a gas to a wound site to enhance healing, reduce the potential for bacterial infections, lessen the need for antibiotics and to create a protective and therapeutic gas atmosphere along a treatment site. More particularly, the invention relates to a device arranged to deliver a gas to a treatment site, the device being connectable to a gas source, the device including (i) a first membrane comprising a flexible, microporous polymer body and (ii) a second membrane comprising a flexible nonporous polymer body. Outer edge portions of the second membrane are bonded to outer edge portions of the first membrane to form an interior chamber of the device, the interior chamber of the device confining introduced gas to the interior chamber such that the introduced gas flows out through the pores of the first membrane and is diffused along the treatment site.

An apparatus such as a fluid mixer, suitable for use with a respirator, including a venturi nozzle for flow of a pressure-controlled fluid; an ambient fluid aperture in fluid communication with the venturi nozzle; a fluid port; a pressure force multiplier in fluid communication with the fluid port; and a valve moveable relative to the venturi nozzle between a start flow position and a stop flow position; where the pressure force multiplier is configured such that fluid forced into the fluid port actuates the valve relative to the venturi nozzle; and where the pressure force multiplier is configured such that fluid withdrawn from the fluid port actuates the valve relative to the venturi nozzle. In one example, a method for a medical gas quality monitoring system includes obtaining measurements of a medical gas via a plurality of sensors, the plurality of sensors including at least one of a humidity sensor, a particulate matter sensor, a carbon dioxide sensor, and a total volatile organic compound (tVOC) sensor, determining a gas quality index of the medical gas based on the obtained measurements, and outputting the determined gas quality index.
