Self-guiding carbon seal system

An apparatus has a first member, a shaft rotatable relative to the first member about an axis, and a seal system. The seal system has: a seal carried by the first member and having a seal face; and a seat carried by the shaft and having a seat face in sliding sealing engagement with the seal face. The seal system is a dry face seal system. The seat further includes a section having: an outer diameter surface encircled by the seal; and a rim.

Non-collapsible flexible sealing membrane and seal assembly for rotary shaft equipment

A non-collapsible flexible sealing membrane (or bellows) for incorporation in a mechanical seal assembly and use in rotary shaft equipment. The sealing membrane includes a substantially radially outward extending first flange portion, which can be urged into an axially shiftable ring by a biasing mechanism. The sealing membrane further includes a substantially axially outboard extending second coaxial portion, substantially radially inward of the balance diameter of the seal. The horizontal portion is advantageously held fixed to a stub sleeve by an annular band. The angle between the vertical portion and the horizontal portion of sealing membrane enables directional control of the forces acting on stub sleeve and primary ring.

A seal arrangement configured to provide an airtight and fluid-tight seal between a first component and a second component, having a first pressure boundary seal disposable at least partially within the gap between the first component and the second component, the first pressure boundary seal being fixable to one of the first or second components to create an airtight seal with the other of the first or second component, the seal arrangement also having a first flame deflector that is configured to bridge across and cover the gap between the first component and the second component so as to create a fluid-tight seal over the gap between the first component and the second component, where the first flame deflector has a convex external shape so as to prevent any fluid impinging upon the first flame deflector from pooling on the first pressure boundary seal.

Feather seal for CMC BOAS

A blade outer air seal assembly includes a support structure and a blade outer air seal having a plurality of segments extending circumferentially about an axis and mounted to the support structure. At least two segments have a base portion extending from a first circumferential side to a second circumferential side, a first protrusion extending from the first circumferential side and having a first slot, and a second protrusion extending from the second circumferential side and having a second slot. A feather seal is arranged in the first slot and the second slot between the at least two segments such that the feather seal is pivotable between first and second positions in response to relative movement between the first and second protrusions.

Retainer for securing a seal element to a seal carrier

An assembly is provided for rotational equipment. This assembly includes a seal carrier, a seal element and a retainer. The seal carrier is configured with a receptacle. The seal element is seated in the receptacle. The retainer is configured to secure the seal element to the seal carrier. The seal element is arranged radially between the seal carrier and the retainer.

Seal for a gas turbine engine

A sealing apparatus for a gas turbine engine includes: a first component; a second component positioned in proximity to the first component such that cavity is defined between the first and second components; a resilient seal disposed in the cavity so as to block gas flow between the first and second components, the resilient seal having a first contact surface contacting the first component and a second contact surface contacting the second component; and wherein the resilient seal is configured so as to produce a rolling movement in response to relative movement of the first and second components.

Rotational equipment seal element with internal fluid passage

An assembly is provided for rotational equipment. This assembly includes a seal land and a seal element. The seal land extends circumferentially around and is rotatable about an axial centerline. The seal land includes a seal land surface. The seal element extends circumferentially around the axial centerline. The seal element includes a seal element surface and a seal element passage. The seal element surface is abutted against and is sealingly engaged with the seal land surface. The seal element passage extends through the seal element to an interface between the seal element surface and the seal land surface.

Reduced radial clearance seal system

A seal system for a gas turbine engine includes a seal runner manufactured of a Molybdenum alloy material that provides a first coefficient of thermal expansion and a seal ring manufactured of a graphitic material that provides a second coefficient of thermal expansion greater than the first coefficient of thermal expansion.

Face seal arrangement for reduced force and pressure

A bearing is mounted to a static structure outwardly of the shaft, and supporting the shaft. A bearing compartment is defined by face seal arrangements on each of two axial sides of a bearing. Each face seal arrangement includes a seal seat rotating with the shaft and a non-rotating sealing ring. The seal housing is exposed to high pressure air outward of the bearing compartment. A coil spring biases the seal housing towards the seal seat, such that the sealing face is biased into contact with the seal seat by a bias force including a net fluid force acting on the seal housing and the coil spring. The sealing face is defined by a contact portion contacting the seal seat and a feed portion recessed from the seal seat. The feed portion includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced feed slots fluidly connected to at least one annular groove.

Reinforced brush seal assembly

A seal assembly for a gas turbine engine according to an example of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a first side plate and a backing plate that extend circumferentially about an assembly axis. The backing plate includes a main body and a first set of abutments that extend outwardly from the main body to abut the first side plate. A first set of pockets are established between adjacent abutments of the first set of abutments. A first brush seal is between the first side plate and the backing plate. Sections of the first brush seal received in respective pockets of the first set of pockets are dimensioned to join together to establish a first sealing relationship with a first gas turbine engine component. A method of assembly is also disclosed.
