Modular thermal storage
A power generation system comprising a shared hot side thermal store, a shared cold side thermal store, a plurality of power subunits, and an electrical bus is disclosed. Each of the power subunits may connected or isolated from the shared hot side thermal store and/or the shared cold side thermal store.
Thermal energy storage system comprising a packed-bed heat storage unit and a packed-bed cold storage unit, and method for operating a thermal energy storage system
The invention relates to a system and a method for storing electrical energy which are based on a closed thermodynamic cycle. They make it possible to store electrical energy in a very efficient, cost-effective, and safe manner. No environmentally hazardous or expensive materials are required. The system comprises a compressor, a turbine, and two packed-bed storage units which are operated at different temperature levels. In order to load the packed-bed storage units, the cycle is operated as a counterclockwise heat pump process. In this process, the heat generated at the outlet of the compressor is expanded at a high temperature level into a first packed-bed storage unit and stored therein. The “cold” produced during the subsequent expansion of the gaseous working medium in a turbine is stored in a second packed-bed storage unit. This requires mechanical energy which is provided by an electrical machine. In order to discharge the energy storage system, the cycle is operated in reverse (i.e., as a clockwise cycle). Before entering the compressor, the working medium is cooled with the cold stored in the second packed-bed storage unit and, after compression, absorbs the heat from the high-temperature packed-bed storage system. The hot working medium at high pressure is expanded by means of the turbine and thus energy is generated.
ENERGY STORAGE PLANT AND PROCESS
An energy storage plant includes a casing for the storage of a working fluid different from atmospheric air, in gaseous phase and in pressure equilibrium with the atmosphere; and a tank for the storage of said working fluid in liquid or super-critical phase with a temperature close to the critical temperature. The critical temperature is close to the ambient temperature. The plant is configured to perform a closed cyclic thermodynamic transformation, first in one direction in a charge configuration and then in an opposite direction in a discharge configuration, between said casing and said tank. In the charge configuration the plant stores heat and pressure and in the discharge configuration generates mechanical energy to drive a driven machine.
Renewable power generation system and method
A system is disclosed that utilizes renewable energy to generate high temperature, superheated steam for driving a prime mover, such as a steam turbine coupled to an electrical generator, and/or to deliver heat where only a portion of the renewable energy system needs to withstand a high temperature working fluid that is necessary to generate high temperature superheated steam.
Power shift system to store and distribute energy with direct compressor drive
Disclosed is a machine learning energy management system that regulates incoming energy sources into compressed air storage operations and energy generation. Compressed air is directed into a thermoregulation system that cycles storage tanks according to physical qualities. A boost impulse creates energy to initiate the electrical energy generation. The compressed air operations and energy generation leverage the heating and cooling of an external HVAC system to improve performance and conservation of the heating and cooling for an external building, wherein compressed air is used to drive a coolant compressor. The system combines real-time data, historical performance data, algorithm control, variable air pressure for demand-based generation, tank-to-tank thermal cycling, building air heat exchanger, and boost pulsation to achieve optimized system efficiency and responsiveness.

Installation for storing thermal energy
An installation for storing thermal energy is provided. The storage is carried out by the compression and relaxation of a working gas, wherein pump and compressor can be driven by, for example, electric motors which temporarily absorb excess power generated in the power grid. The generated thermal energy is temporarily stored in a cold accumulator and a heat accumulator. According to the invention, a vapor circuit is provided to connect to the heat accumulator and the cold accumulator for discharging the installation, by which a turbine for generating electrical energy can be driven by a generator. Said circuit is implemented by means of another conduit system distinct from the circuit for charging the installation. Advantageously, thermal energy generated from overcapacities in the power grid can thus be reconverted with high yield into electrical energy via a vapor circuit.
