The object of this invention is to simplify the timing system of all types of internal combustion engine. The system eliminates existing conventional timing trains. The hydraulic, mechanical or electrical/electronic direct timing systems that form the subject of the invention offer minimal resistance and minimal transmission. The piston strokes are given directly by the crankshaft by means of a system fixed thereto which via a mechanical or hydraulic or electrical or electronic system transmits the strokes to the cylinder valves. The system can be connected to all types of indirect transmission and has adjusting systems that allow it to be adapted to suit all types of internal combustion engine.

The position sensor (12) takes position readings of the valve(s) (16) as the valve(s) (16) actuate in the piston engine. The variable valve actuation assembly (10) controls actuation timing of the valve(s) (16). Actuation timing of the valve(s) (16) is adjustable based, in part or more, upon one or more position reading(s) of the position sensor (12). The variable valve actuation assembly (10) can be a lost motion assembly (10).

The present invention concerns a method for electrically controlling a valve actuator in a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine, where the actuator comprises a first solenoid (A) with a plunger (5) and a second solenoid (B) with a plunger (15), wherein the engine has at least one cylinder (1) with at least one freely controllable engine valve comprising a valve disc (10) with associated valve stem (11) and a valve spring (4) and where air is introduced, or exhaust gases are evacuated from, a combustion chamber (3) past a lower part of the valve stem with the valve disc via at least one channel (2) in the cylinder, wherein the valve actuator is activatable to open the engine valve. The invention is characterized in that both the first and second solenoid are activated during opening of the engine valve.

A mechanically simplified electric and fluid (gas, vapor or liquid) control for a piston engine, including an engine valve actuator system that eliminates rotating cam shafts and heavy internal combustion engine valve closing springs by using an electromagnet and an armature which is attracted by the electromagnet to initiate movement of both a fluid control valve and the engine valve. When the control valve is moved only slightly off its seat by the armature, fluid pressure instantly drives the control valve a much greater distance closing the engine valve. Opening and closing time is regulated independently. Engine valves are opened by reversing the fluid pressure balance across the control valve at the time selected.

A solenoid actuator for an injection valve or an intake valve is driven with current control during closed-loop control phases. In between the closed-loop current control, the actuator must be clamped to an opposite voltage so as to quickly decrease the current through the solenoid. The current is measured immediately following the clamping phase so as to determine whether or not the clamping phase resulted in the correct current level. If the measured current indicates an extraneous reduction in the current, the clamping phase duration is shortened for the next activation of this clamping phase. If the measured current indicates an insufficient decrease, the clamping phase duration is lengthened for the next following activation cycle.

A valve arrangement for a cylinder of an internal combustion engine arrangement includes a check valve configured to be positioned at an intake side port of the cylinder for controlling gas flow into the cylinder, wherein the valve arrangement further includes an intake valve arrangement positioned upstream from the check valve, and an actuating arrangement configured to controllably position the intake valve arrangement for closing the intake side port.

A method for controlling a drivetrain of a motor vehicle is disclosed. Either a start mode for starting the reciprocating engine is activated via the driving vehicle wheel, or a coasting mode is activated for driving the reciprocating engine via the driving vehicle wheel. At least one volume-reducing stroke is executed that follows an intake stroke for at least one cylinder of the reciprocating engine with at least intermittently open cylinder. Alternately at least one volume-enlarging stroke is executed for at least one cylinder of the reciprocating engine, which is followed by a compression stroke of this cylinder, and at least one volume-reducing stroke of this cylinder, which follows an expansion stroke that follows the compression stroke, with a cylinder that is closed, if possible, in this operating mode.

Linear valve actuator system and method for controlling valve operation

The system, according to one embodiment of the present invention, comprises a stationary coil linear motor to drive a valve with a stem comprising a ferromagnetic property. The linear motor moves the valve in response to control governed by an electronic valve control computer. The valve is movable between a closed position at a selectable rate of both acceleration and speed for a selectable distance (“lift”) to a second selectable open position, including all position variations between the fully open and fully closed states. Valve position, velocity and acceleration can be varied both during a valve stroke and from one stroke to the next, as controlled by the logic programmed on a non-transitive memory of the electronic valve control computer.
