Apparatus for controlling valve timing in an internal combustion engine locates a first valve port in a first side of the engine cylinder and a second valve port in a second side of the engine cylinder. A first rotating valve disc and a second rotating valve disc are respectively disposed next to the first and second valve port. Each rotating valve disc includes a valve port. Each disc rotates in synchronism with the crankshaft to align its' port with the respective first and second valve ports. A variety of intake devices coupled to the first rotating valve disc control intake air flow into the engine cylinder, and a variety of exhaust devices coupled to the second rotating valve disc control exhaust gas flow from the engine cylinder.

Internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine is provided, which includes a variable phase mechanism configured to change rotational phases of intake and exhaust camshafts so that a valve overlap is made. An intake cam lobe is formed such that an open period of the intake valve is 210° or larger and 330° or smaller of a crank angle. The exhaust cam lobe is formed such that, during the overlap period with the rotational phase of the intake camshaft advanced to the maximum and the rotational phase of the exhaust camshaft retarded to the maximum, an effective valve lift amount (Lift(CA)) of the exhaust valve which is a function of a crank angle from the open timing (CA.sub.IVO) of the intake valve to a middle timing (CA.sub.center) of the overlap period, an inner circumferential length (L_ex) of a valve seat, and a swept volume (V) per cylinder satisfy the following formula: 0 . 0 1 5 L _ ex V × C A IVO C A c e n t e r Lift ( CA ) d C A .

Rotating actuator system for controlling valve actuation in an internal combustion engine

A system for controlling actuation of an engine valve comprises a pivot and a torsion spring having first and second legs operatively connected to the pivot. A lever arm is adjustably affixed to and extending away from the pivot, and is further rotatable about a pivot axis of the pivot between a retracted position and an extended position and vice versa relative to a motion conveying component. Furthermore, a housing is provided having a pivot bore formed therein with the pivot rotatably disposed in the pivot bore. The housing further comprises a first and second openings intersecting with the pivot bore such that the first and second legs extend out of the first opening and the lever arm extends out of the second opening. When a first force is applied by the motion conveying component to the lever arm, such first force maintains the lever arm in the extended position.

A method of using a through axle switching rocker arm according to one example of the present disclosure is provided. The switching rocker arm comprises an outer and inner arm and a roller axle. The inner arm is pivotally coupled to the outer arm about a pivot axle and has an inner bushing that supports an inner roller. The inner bushing defines an inner diameter. The roller axle extends through the inner bushing and defines an outer diameter. The inner diameter of the inner bushing engages the outer diameter of the roller axle thereby inhibiting further pivoting of the inner arm relative to the outer arm defining a rocker arm travel constraint. The method includes designing first and second cam profiles based on the through axle switching rocker arm such that a difference in lift between the first and second cam profiles is held within the rocker arm travel constraint.
