A variable cam timing phaser mounted to a camshaft and including a housing assembly having an outer circumference for accepting a drive force; a rotor assembly received by the housing assembly defining a chamber separated into an advance chamber and retard chamber by a vane; a control valve in fluid communication with the advance chamber and the retard chamber, a source of fluid, and a sump through at least one exhaust line connected to at least one exhaust port; and at least one check valve in the at least one exhaust line between the control valve and the sump. The at least one check valve prevents air from the sump connected to the at least one exhaust port from being sucked into the variable cam timing phaser through the at least one exhaust port during a torque reversal of the camshaft.

A variable camshaft phaser is provided having a stator attached to a driving part, and a rotor located within the stator and attached to a driven part. First and second cover plates are located on respective first and second axial sides of the stator. Inwardly directed vanes of the stator, the rotor, and the first and second cover plates define at least one chamber. Radially outwardly directed vanes of the rotor divide the at least one chamber into an advance side working chamber and a retard side working chamber. A locking pin bore is located in the rotor, and a locking pin is located in the locking pin bore. One of the first and second cover plates includes a locking pin receiving opening. A magnetic part is located in the locking pin receiving opening to remove metallic particles and contaminants from the flow of pressurized hydraulic fluid.

In one example, the engine may include non-deactivating intake valves, deactivating intake valves, and only non-deactivating exhaust valves. The non-deactivating exhaust valves may operate to open and close during an engine cycle while deactivating intake valves remain closed during the engine cycle to prevent air flow through selected engine cylinders.

System and method for a variable cam timing phase control apparatus with isolator

Methods and systems are provided for a phase control apparatus in a variable cam timing (VCT) system of an engine, the phase control apparatus having a locked configuration where a locking pin coupled to a first vane of the vane rotor is engaged with a locking pin recess in a cover plate of the phase control apparatus. In one example, the phase control apparatus includes a rubber or plastic isolator pad positioned in a recess in a wall adjacent to the first vane such that when the vane rotor is rotated to the locked configuration, the first vane contacts the isolator pad before it can strike the housing. The isolator pad serves to maintain the gap between the first vane and the housing, and also reduces the likelihood of other vanes of the vane rotor from striking the housing.
