Valve motion measurement assembly for an internal combustion engine

A valve motion measurement assembly is provided for a cylinder valve of an internal combustion engine provided with a valve stem and with a valve head. The valve motion measurement assembly includes a valve position sensor, a supporting bracket provided with at least one sensor seat for the valve position sensor, and a sensor target element configured to be coupled to the valve stem at a distance from the valve head to follow the motion of the cylinder valve. The valve position sensor interacts with the sensor target element for determining the position of the cylinder valve.

An oil supply control device for an engine includes: a hydraulic controller which outputs a control value to an adjusting device to cause a detected hydraulic pressure detected by a hydraulic pressure sensor to coincide with a predetermined hydraulic pressure value; a determination portion which compares an output control value output from the hydraulic controller to the adjusting device when the detected hydraulic pressure coincides with the predetermined hydraulic pressure value and a control value stored in a memory, to determine whether or not a difference between the output control value and the stored control value lies within a predetermined allowable range; and a device controller which allows activation of a hydraulic actuating device when an oil temperature is not lower than a first temperature in a case where the difference lies within the allowable range, inhibits activation of the hydraulic actuating device when the oil temperature is lower than a second temperature higher than the first temperature in a case where the difference does not lie within the allowable range, and allows activation of the hydraulic actuating device when the oil temperature is not lower than the second temperature in a case where the difference does not lie within the allowable range.

A method for controlling intake and exhaust valves of an engine may include: determining, by a controller, a target opening duration of the intake and exhaust valves based on an engine load and an engine speed; modifying, by an intake continuous variable valve duration (CVVD) device and by an exhaust CVVD device, current opening and closing timings of the intake valve and/or exhaust valve based on the target opening duration of the valves; and advancing or retarding, by the intake and/or exhaust CVVD devices, the current opening timing of the intake and exhaust valves while simultaneously retarding or advancing the current closing timing of the intake and exhaust valve by a predetermined value based on the target opening duration.

Development of a switching roller finger follower for cylinder deactivation in internal combustion engines

A system for selectively deactivating engine valves of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The system employs switching rocker assemblies between the valves of the engine and rotating cam lobes. The disclosed design is able to operate using a single cam lobe per valve. The rocker assembly employs a first arm pivotally attached to a second arm at one end. The first arm engages the valve and the second arm has a roller bearing that engages the cam lobe. A latch causes the first and second arm to move in unison following the cam surface when latched. When unlatched, the second arm follows and moves according to the rotating cam surface, but the first arm does not follow and does not actuate the valve, thereby deactivating the cylinder.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SWITCHING ROLLER FINGER FOLLOWER FOR CYLINDER DEACTIVATION IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

A system includes a rocker arm assembly for operative engagement with a first and second cam. The assembly includes a first arm for operatively engaging the first cam for a first desired lift profile, a second arm for operatively engaging the second cam for a second desired lift profile, where the second arm includes a latch to engage the second arm with the first arm. The latch is responsive to supplied oil pressure and release oil pressure to switch between lift profiles. The system includes the latch coupled to the supplied or released oil pressure to engage the arms before the first and second arms are engaged with the base circle portion of each of the respective first and second cams.
