Disclosed is a water ingress preventive structure for a tailpipe which discharges exhaust gas outside of a vehicle at a terminal of an exhaust passage system. A curved shape is imparted to the tailpipe. A partition is mounted on an inner periphery of a curved portion outward of a curved direction so as to be gradually spaced apart from the inner periphery toward downstream in a direction of flow of the exhaust gas. Thus, a dead end portion is defined by the partition and the inner periphery of the curved portion outward of the curved direction.

A diffusion fitting is coupled to a second end of the conduit to receive exhaust gases discharged from the conduit. The diffusion fitting has an outer wall that includes a curved surface. The curved surface is configured to guide the exhaust gases discharged from the conduit about an axis so that exhaust gases exit a first side of the diffusion fitting rotating about the axis.

An air cavity is tapered from its first end to its second end to increase a velocity of the flow of air as it passes in operation through the air cavity. The second end of the air cavity is disposed, in a direction of forward travel of the vehicle The flow of air from the second end of the air cavity interacts with the exhaust gases which are emitted from the elongate exhaust tube for causing a pressure reduction at the second end of the elongate exhaust tube. The exhaust system is capable, in operation, of providing an engine fuel efficiency improvement in a range of 7% to 23%.

An exhaust purification device for a vehicle with an engine and an electric motor includes: an electrically heated catalyst that is heated by power supply to purify engine exhaust at a predetermined activation temperature or higher; an exhaust pipe with a vacuum layer covering at least an entire side surface of the catalyst; first and second opening/closing valves; and a control unit that controls the power supply and driving of the valves. Upon closing the valves after the vehicle is stopped and the engine is shut down, , the control unit drives the motor to motor the engine and discharge combustion gas from the engine and exhaust pipe, and replaces it with fresh air. The control unit then closes the second valve to heat the catalyst to a target temperature, and thereafter, when the temperature reaches the target temperature, stops the power supply and closes the first valve.
