Air-transparent selective sound silencer using ultra-open metamaterial

A bilayer metamaterial silencer allows substantial fluid through the apparatus, while mitigating the propagation of sound through the apparatus, and while providing a form factor that is significantly more compact than previously-known devices. Moreover, illustrative embodiments allow a designer to specify one or both of the frequency or frequencies at which the apparatus mitigates sound propagation, and/or the bandwidth around the frequency or frequencies at which the apparatus mitigates sound propagation.

Fluid-Cooled Manifolds and Engine Systems

A fluid-cooled manifold is configured to cool exhaust from an engine. The fluid-cooled manifold includes a plurality of exhaust runners. Each of the exhaust runners includes a runner body having an inlet end and an outlet end, an exhaust conduit extending through the runner body, and a coolant passage extending through the runner body. The fluid-cooled manifold also includes an exhaust collection manifold including a plurality of inlets. Each inlet of the exhaust collection manifold is coupled to the exhaust outlet opening of a respective one of the exhaust runners. The fluid-cooled manifold also includes a coolant feed pipe and a coolant exit pipe. The coolant feed pipe includes a plurality of outlets coupled to the coolant inlets of the exhaust runners. Likewise, the coolant exit pipe includes a plurality of inlets coupled to the coolant outlets of the exhaust runners.

Pipe and metal sheet subassembly for an exhaust treatment device

A method of manufacturing a subassembly for an exhaust treatment device includes providing a metal sheet including first and second apertures having respective first and second sizes, and a one-piece pipe including first and second linear portions having respective third and fourth sizes. The method further includes defining the first size based on a first difference between the first size and the third size being less than or equal to a predetermined value, and defining the second size based on manufacturing tolerances of the pipe to assure that the second linear portion will pass through the second aperture while the first linear portion passes through the first aperture. The method further includes fixing the first linear portion to the sheet, expanding the second linear portion from the fourth size to an enlarged size less than or equal to the predetermined value, and fixing the second linear portion to the sheet.
