An engine cooling system in a vehicle comprises a first coolant circuit and a second coolant circuit connecting an engine to a radiator. A thermostat is arranged in the first coolant circuit and is arranged to be closed during engine warm-up, to prevent flow through the first coolant circuit. The cooling system further comprises a bypass circuit connecting the thermostat to the second coolant circuit and at least one parallel circuit. Each parallel circuit is connected to the second coolant circuit upstream of the bypass circuit, wherein a partial coolant flow is directed from the bypass circuit and upstream through the second coolant circuit into the at least one parallel circuit during engine warm-up. The disclosure further relates to a method for controlling such an engine cooling system.

METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR EXHAUST GAS HEAT RECOVERY

Methods and systems are provided for exhaust flow in an engine system including a split-exhaust manifold for expediting exhaust catalyst light-off and engine warm-up while reducing condensation in the engine system. In one example, a method may include, before exhaust catalyst light-off, flowing all or more exhaust gases, via a first exhaust valve and a first exhaust manifold, to an exhaust catalyst by passing a heat exchanger. Further, after light-off but before engine coolant warms up to a threshold temperature, all or more exhaust may be delivered to the heat exchanger, via a second exhaust valve and a second different manifold, prior to flowing to the exhaust catalyst; and exhaust gas recirculation may not be provided until the coolant reaches the threshold temperature to reduce condensation.

ENGINE COOLING APPARATUS

An engine cooling apparatus includes a mechanical water pump having a suction hole and N discharge holes (N is an integer not less than two), N water jackets that are arranged in an engine and correspond to the N discharge holes, N joint passages, each of which joins one of the N discharge holes to the associated water jacket, a return passage that returns coolant to the suction hole after the coolant has passed through the N water jackets and has merged in a merging portion, a coolant stopping mechanism that blocks return flow of coolant through the return passage, and N communication passages each of which allows the corresponding one of the N joint passages to communicate with the suction hole while bypassing the N water jackets and the coolant stopping mechanism.

Active warm-up system and method

A vehicle heating/cooling system has first and second fluid circulation loops for circulating engine coolant and automotive fluid. A first heat exchanger transfers heat from the coolant to air for the passenger compartment. A second heat exchanger transfers heat between the coolant and automotive fluid. A first valve has first and second inlets for receiving coolant from hot and cold coolant sources, and an outlet for discharging coolant to the second heat exchanger. A second valve has an inlet for receiving coolant from the first coolant source, and an outlet for discharging coolant to the first inlet of the first valve.
