When an amount of a backward tumble flow is smaller than an amount of a forward tumble flow, the intake-side valve recess is used as a first valve recess and the exhaust-side valve recess is used as a second valve recess. When the amount of the backward tumble flow is larger than the amount of the forward tumble flow, the exhaust-side valve recess is used as a first valve recess and the intake-side valve recess is used as a second valve recess. An inclination angle of the first valve recess is larger than an inclination angle of the second valve recess when comparing the inclination angle such that a height of the recess decreases gradually toward an inner side of a cross-section.

Control device for engine

A control device for an engine is provided, which includes a fuel injector attached to the engine, a spark plug disposed to be oriented into a combustion chamber, a swirl control valve provided in an intake passage, and a controller connected to the fuel injector, the spark plug, and the swirl control valve and configured to control the fuel injector, the spark plug, and the swirl control valve. The swirl control valve closes in a given operating state of the engine. The fuel injector injects fuel after the swirl control valve is closed, between intake stroke and an intermediate stage of compression stroke. The fuel injector injects the fuel after the first fuel injection. The spark plug performs the ignition after the second fuel injection so that the mixture gas starts combustion by flame propagation and then unburned mixture gas self-ignites.

Method of monitoring an engine able to operate with selective valve deactivation

A method is provided for monitoring the operation of intake valves of an internal combustion engine, where at least one or more cylinders of the engine have more than one intake valve, and adapted to operate in different modes where at least one of the intake valves for a particular cylinder can be selectively activated, or deactivated so as not to open during a firing sequence for the cylinder. The method includes a) monitoring the intake manifold air pressure; b) during a time window with respect to the intake phase for said respective cylinder, determining the condition of whether the manifold pressure drops by a threshold or to a particular threshold level; and c) determining the functionality of the intake valves dependent on the outcome of step b).

Internal combustion engine with an electronically controlled tumble control valve

An internal combustion engine includes an ignition plug and an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to: (i) execute a lean-burn operation in a first operation region, (ii) execute an operation in a second operation region at an air-fuel ratio lower than an air-fuel ratio during the lean-burn operation, and (iii) control a gas flow in a cylinder so that a ratio of a change in a gas flow speed around the ignition plug during ignition to a change in an engine rotation speed in a first engine rotation speed region within the first operation region is smaller than the ratio in a second engine rotation speed region within the second operation region.

DIESEL ENGINE

A diesel engine comprises: a cylinder head covering one end of a cylinder; a piston having a crown surface opposed to the cylinder head, and performing a reciprocating movement within the cylinder; and a fuel injector attached to the cylinder head. The cylinder head is formed with an intake port so as to generate a swirl flow within the cylinder. The crown surface of the piston is formed with a cavity which is recessed toward an opposite side of the cylinder head and which has a circular shape in planar view, and a notch which is recessed radially outward from a peripheral edge of the cavity. The fuel injector is formed with an injection hole oriented toward an inside of the cavity.

DIESEL ENGINE

In a diesel engine, a crown surface of a piston is formed with a cavity which is recessed toward an opposite side of a cylinder head, and which has a circular shape in planar view, and a wall surface forming the cavity includes a lip which is formed on a peripheral edge of the cavity, and which is protruded radially inward, and the lip is formed with a plurality of notches which are recessed radially outward from the peripheral edge of the cavity, and a fuel injector is arranged at a center of the cylinder head, and formed with a plurality of injection holes oriented toward an inside of the cavity so as to radially spray fuel within the cavity, and each of the plurality of the notches is arranged between oriented directions of two adjacent injection holes.

INTAKE PORT STRUCTURE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

In an engine (1), an ignition plug (22) is arranged between a first intake port (6) and a second intake port (7). In a case where a downstream end portion (71) of the second intake port (7) is divided into a first intake port (6) side and an opposite first intake port (6) side, an inner wall surface (71a) of an opposite first intake port (6) side portion extends in a direction toward the first intake port (6) as extending from an upstream side to a downstream side of the second intake port (7).

INTAKE PORT STRUCTURE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

In an engine (1), when an intake valve (16) opens, a downstream end portion (61) of a first intake port (6) extends to direct to between a shade back (162a) positioned on a cylinder axis (C) side with respect to a valve stem (161) and a ceiling surface (51) facing the shade back (162a). As viewed in a section perpendicular to a direction perpendicular to an intake air flow direction, a second intake port side inner wall surface (61a) at the downstream end portion (61) of the first intake port (6) curves apart from a second intake port (7) in a direction from an exhaust side to an intake side as compared to the shape of an opposite second intake port side inner wall surface (61b) mirror-reversed to a second intake port (7) side.

COMPRESSION IGNITED COMBUSTION ENGINE

A compression ignited combustion engine has at least one cylinder and first and second gas intake ports in a cylinder head restricting a combustion chamber. One gas intake passage leads to the two ports and is widened in a Y-shaped end influencing gas entering each port into a tangential flow in opposite direction with respect to the flow into the other port. The first intake port is designed to allow gas entering this port to continue said tangential flow so as to enter the combustion chamber in a swirl in a first rotation direction, whereas the second intake port is designed to guide gas entering this port to also enter the combustion chamber in a swirl in said first rotation direction.

An intake device of an internal combustion engine includes a partition, a control valve, and a third passage. The partition divides an interior of an intake pipe that couples with a combustion chamber into a first passage and a second passage. The control valve is capable of opening and closing the first passage. The third passage opens at or near a coupling site between the partition and the intake pipe on an inner face of the second passage. The third passage is configured to be capable of sucking in at least a part of a boundary layer produced at or near the coupling site by a vapor flowing through the second passage in a state in which the control valve is working in a direction of closing the first passage.
