Continuously variable transmission
Embodiments are directed to a front end accessory drive (FEAD) and power modulating devices (PMD) which can be used in a FEAD. In one embodiment, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is coupled directly to a crankshaft of a prime mover, and the CVT is used to regulate the speed and/or torque delivered to an accessory. A compound drive device includes a motor/generator subassembly cooperating with a CVT subassembly to provide a motor functionality with torque multiplication or division, or alternatively, a generator functionality with torque multiplication or division. In some embodiments, a FEAD includes a PMD having a sun shaft configured to couple to a sun of the PMD and to an electric motor component, such as an electrical armature or an electrical field. In one embodiment, the electrical armature the electrical field are placed concentrically and coaxially and configured to rotate relative to one another in opposite directions.
Engine
An engine is described having a crankcase, a liner and a head assembly. The crankcase is split along a plane defining a two part crankcase, where fluid passages are passing through only one of the crankcase portions, so as to not require crossing the split line. A connecting rod also includes a tapered end, and the piston has a complementary carrier receiving the connecting rod.

Valvetrain conversion kit for an engine
A valvetrain conversion kit for an engine can comprises at least one timing idler rim gear configured to be meshed with at least one of a crank gear of the engine and a cam gear of the engine. The kit can include a first timing gear chamber member having a plurality of engine mounting locations corresponding to a plurality of corresponding cover mounting locations on an internal combustion engine body. The first timing gear chamber member can be configured to be rigidly attached to an engine body at the plurality of engine mounting locations. The first timing gear chamber member can also include a timing idler rim gear shaft supported by the interior surface, the timing idler rim gear shaft having an exterior shaft surface where the exterior shaft surface is configured for rotatably supporting the timing idler rim gear.
VEHICLE AND METHOD OF CONTROLLING A VEHICLE
A vehicle and method for controlling a vehicle having a variable displacement engine with an auxiliary machine connected directly to the engine crankshaft and to an energy storage device includes switching from a cylinder disablement (VDE) mode to a normal mode when the torque demand and engine speed lie outside an outer range defined by a first threshold (T.sub.out), and switching from the normal mode to the VDE mode when the torque demand and engine speed lie within an inner range, which lies within the outer range and defined by a second threshold (T.sub.in). When operating in a band between the two thresholds, the auxiliary machine draws energy from the energy storage device and supplements the output torque from the engine if operating in the VDE mode, and derives torque from the engine crankshaft to recharge the energy storage device if operating in the normal mode.
